Concrete Driveways in Cambridge
We pour new and replacement concrete driveways across Cambridge, in Galt, Preston, Hespeler and the newer surveys between them. The ground decides the job here: damp river-valley soil near the Grand and the Speed, sandy moraine ground up on the higher land, and disturbed fill on new lots. Union-certified crews, a free written quote that holds, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Cambridge is three old towns joined in 1973, and a driveway here depends on which one you live in. Old Galt and Preston sit low where the Grand and the Speed rivers meet, with a higher water table and century homes. Away from the rivers, the ground runs to the sand and gravel of the moraine. And newer subdivision ground is disturbed fill.
So a Cambridge driveway is decided under the slab, not on pour day. We dig to stable ground, compact a granular base, and pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete so the surface holds up to freeze-thaw and road salt. The full spec lives on our concrete driveways page; this page is about what a Cambridge driveway needs in particular.
Damp valley ground in old Galt and Preston
Down near the rivers, the water table is higher and the ground takes on more damp than it does up on higher land. Water gets under a slab, freezes, lifts it, thaws and drops it, and that is what cracks an old driveway. So the fix starts with the base. We excavate to stable ground, build the base in compacted lifts, and grade the new driveway so water drains away from the slab and the house.
Sandy moraine ground on the higher land
Away from the rivers, much of Cambridge sits on moraine sand and gravel. Sand drains well, so frost heaves a slab less here than it does on clay. But sand also washes out, and a driveway edge with nothing to hold its base can undermine itself over a few seasons. We contain the base at the edges and steer runoff away from them, so the water that drains through the sand does not carry the base with it.
Old driveways out, first driveways in
In Galt, Preston and Hespeler, the older and postwar streets are due for driveway replacement. That job starts with tear-out: we break out the old slab, haul it away, rebuild the base while the ground is open, and pour fresh. Near the stone homes of Galt, a bright white slab can fight a grey stone house, so we often suggest exposed aggregate or a warmer broom finish.
In the newer subdivisions, the work is a first pour or a wider driveway. Subdivision ground is disturbed fill, and the backfill along a new foundation keeps moving for a year or two, so we compact the base properly rather than trust it. Where trucks or trailers park, we pour 125 mm instead of 100 mm.
A new slab needs vehicles kept off for 48 hours at least, and heavy trucks off for a week. Cambridge books into our regular weekly schedule in the pouring season, reached from our Brant County routes through Paris and Ayr.
Straight answers
Our old driveway in Galt near the river has heaved and cracked. Can you replace it?
Yes. We tear out and haul away the old slab and rebuild the base while the ground is open. Water that gets under a slab can freeze, lift it and crack it. The new driveway goes on an excavated, compacted granular base, graded to drain away from the house. Tear-out, hauling and disposal are written into the quote.
We have a new build in a Hespeler subdivision. When can we pour a concrete driveway?
After the builder sets the final grade and the lot has had a season to settle. New-build ground is disturbed fill, and the backfill beside a new foundation keeps moving for a year or two. We compact the base properly instead of trusting it.
What finish suits a driveway beside an old stone house in Galt?
Exposed aggregate or a warmer-toned broom finish usually sits better with grey stone than a bright white slab. A broom finish is dragged for grip, and exposed aggregate grips boots in ice season.
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Cambridge?
It turns on size, finish, the base the ground needs, access, and whether an old slab has to come out first. Broom is the plain finish; exposed aggregate and stamped cost more. A free written quote comes after a site visit, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
