Concrete Walkways & Steps in Cambridge

We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and porches across Cambridge, in Galt, Preston, Hespeler and the newer surveys between them. Near the Grand and Speed rivers the job is about water at the foot of the steps. On sandy ground away from the rivers it is about holding the base at the edges. On a new lot it is about letting the fill settle first. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Steps and walkways are the part of a Cambridge house people touch every day, and the ground under them decides how long they last. Cambridge is three old towns joined in 1973, and what your entrance sits on depends on where in the city you live. Old Galt and Preston sit low where the Grand and Speed rivers meet. Away from the rivers the ground runs to the sand and gravel of the moraine. The newer surveys around Galt, Preston and Hespeler sit on disturbed fill. See our Cambridge page for everything else we do in the city.

The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the 100 mm walkway, the footings and the riser heights, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what Cambridge ground and Cambridge homes change.

Near the rivers: steps that shed water, not collect it

Down near the Grand and the Speed, in the cores of old Galt and Preston, the water table is higher and the ground takes on more damp. Many homes here are century stone or brick, and their foundations already work hard against that water. A set of steps that has settled toward the house, or a walkway that slopes at the door, sends every rain and spring melt at the wall.

Steps that attach to a house get footings below the frost line, about 1.2 metres down, or are tied into the foundation wall where that is the sounder detail. We set the walkway and the landing to slope away from the house. If the wall beside the steps already takes on water, we tell you, and we can look at basement waterproofing in Cambridge before new steps go in beside the problem.

Sandy moraine ground: hold the edge

Away from the rivers, much of Cambridge sits on moraine sand and gravel. Sand drains well, so frost heaves a walkway less here than it would on clay. But sand also washes out, and a path edge or the foot of a step with nothing holding its base can undermine itself over a few seasons. We contain the base at the edges and steps and steer runoff away from them, so the water that drains through the sand does not carry the base with it.

Stone homes in Galt, and steps on new lots

In the stone streets of Galt, a bright white slab can fight a grey stone house. We lean to finishes that sit with it, like exposed aggregate or a warmer-toned broom, and on repairs we match the lines and proportions of the steps that are already there. West Galt's Dickson Hill is a protected heritage district, so we work to what the streetscape calls for.

The newer subdivisions around Galt, Preston and Hespeler are first-pour country. Subdivision ground is disturbed fill, and the backfill along a new foundation keeps moving for a year or two. We usually wait until the builder has set the final grade and the lot has had a season to settle, and we compact the base properly rather than trust it. Booking the quote in spring usually gets a better date once the summer pour season fills.

Repair, relevel or rebuild?

Not every worn or sunken step needs replacing. Sound steps that have settled can sometimes be lifted back into position once the water problem is fixed. Steps that are cracked through, or that have taken water into their body for years, get rebuilt on proper footings.

We tell you which one you have at the free site visit. The written quote names each piece so you can compare it with anyone else's. Cambridge books into our regular weekly schedule in season.

Questions

Straight answers

Our Galt front steps have settled toward the house. Can you fix them?

Yes. Steps poured onto backfill beside a foundation settle and tip, because the soil beside a foundation is backfill, never as solid as undisturbed ground. The fix is to relevel or rebuild the steps on footings below the frost line, and to move the water that caused it. We tell you which one you need at the site visit.

Can new steps suit an older stone house in Galt?

Yes. We lean to finishes that settle beside grey stone, like exposed aggregate or a warmer-toned broom, and on repairs we keep the lines and proportions of the original steps where we can.

We bought a new build on the edge of Hespeler. When can we pour the front walkway and steps?

After the builder sets the final grade and the lot has had a season to settle. Subdivision ground is disturbed fill, and the backfill along a new foundation keeps moving for a year or two, so we compact the base properly rather than trust it. Booking the quote in spring usually gets you a better date.

Can you rebuild the walkway and steps together?

Yes. Doing them as one project lets us set the path grade, landing height, riser spacing and drainage together. The written quote can show the walkway and the steps separately.

How much do new concrete steps cost in Cambridge?

Steps are quoted by the job, not by area. The number of risers, the total height, the footings, the drainage work and the tear-out of the old set drive the cost. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
