Concrete Driveways in Guelph
We pour new and replacement concrete driveways across Guelph, from the first driveway in a south-end survey to a tear-out on an older street near the rivers. Guelph ground is drumlin clay-loam over limestone that sits close beneath, so the base decides how long the slab lasts. Union-certified crews, a free written quote that holds, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Two things make a Guelph driveway its own job. The first is the ground: drumlin clay-loam that holds water and heaves a slab when frost gets under a shallow base, with limestone bedrock close enough in places that a deep dig can reach rock. The second is the rules: Guelph sets a maximum driveway width by the zoning of each property, and the dropped curb at the street may not be wider than that.
So we settle both before a form goes in. We dig to stable ground, compact a Granular A base in lifts, and pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete for freeze-thaw and road salt. The full spec lives on our concrete driveways page; this page is about what a Guelph driveway needs in particular.
Clay-loam on top, limestone close beneath
The clay-loam under most Guelph lots acts like any clay ground under a driveway. It holds water, and water that freezes under a thin base lifts the slab. The fix is depth and drainage, not thicker concrete: excavate to stable ground, build the base up in compacted lifts, and grade the slab so melt runs off it and away from the house.
The limestone under the clay is close enough in parts of the city that an excavation can reach it. That is not usually a problem for a driveway, but it can change how deep we dig and where the water goes. We check it at the site visit instead of guessing.
Width rules and the curb cut
Guelph limits how wide a driveway may be, and the limit depends on how your property is zoned. If a wider driveway also needs a wider opening at the street, the City handles that as an entrance permit: a curb cut lengthens the dropped part of the curb, a curb fill shortens it, and the new dropped curb may not be wider than the maximum driveway width your zoning allows.
Find your property's maximum width before you plan a widening. The City's zoning staff answer that question by email at zoning@guelph.ca. We lay out the new driveway to the width your property allows, so the slab and the curb line up.
South-end surveys and the older streets
In the south end, where Guelph has grown hardest, the calls are often for the driveway work a builder left out: a wider driveway, a garage pad beside it, or a decorative finish once the landscaping starts. In the postwar belt and the older streets near the Speed and Eramosa, the job is more often a replacement. We break out the old slab, haul it away, fix the base problem that cracked or lifted it, and pour fresh.
On an older limestone or brick home, a bright new slab can look out of place. Exposed aggregate or a warmer-toned broom finish sits better beside grey stone. Guelph jobs book into our regular Waterloo Region routes on the Cambridge and Kitchener side in season. A new slab needs vehicles kept off for 48 hours at least, so plan the pour around when you need the car.
Straight answers
Can I widen my concrete driveway in Guelph?
Often, but only to the width your zoning allows. Guelph sets a maximum driveway width by the zoning of each property, and the dropped curb at the street may not be wider than that maximum. Ask the City's zoning staff (zoning@guelph.ca) for your property's limit, and apply for an entrance permit if the curb needs a curb cut. We build the driveway to the width you are allowed.
Will you hit limestone when you dig for a Guelph driveway?
Sometimes. The limestone bedrock sits close under the clay-loam in parts of Guelph. It is not usually a problem for a driveway, but it can change how deep we dig and how we handle drainage. We check it at the free site visit, and anything it changes goes in the written quote.
Our old driveway near downtown has heaved and cracked. Can you replace it?
Yes. We tear out and haul away the old slab, find what lifted it (usually water held in clay under a thin base), and fix that before we pour. The new driveway goes on an excavated, compacted Granular A base graded to drain. Tear-out and disposal go in the written quote, not a surprise at the end.
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Guelph?
Size starts it, then the finish, the base the ground needs, access, and whether an old slab has to come out first. The clay-loam and the occasional shallow rock can both add base work. We do not post a flat rate that would only mislead you. A firm written quote comes after a free site visit, and the number we give you is the number you pay.
