Concrete Driveways in Brantford

We pour new, replacement and widened concrete driveways across Brantford. The city sits on heavy clay that holds water and heaves a slab on a thin base, so every driveway starts with a dug-out, compacted granular base and a 32 MPa air-entrained mix. Union-certified crews do the work, the labour carries a lifetime warranty, and the quote is free and in writing.

Brantford asks for two kinds of driveway work. In the old wards near the river crossings, Eagle Place, Holmedale, Echo Place and Terrace Hill, calls bring full tear-out replacements of old slabs. Out west along the Shellard Lane corridor in West Brant, Wyndfield included, owners call to widen the narrow driveway the builder poured.

Under both sits the same ground. The full spec, from mix to joints to finishes, is on our concrete driveways page. This page is about what Brantford's clay and its housing change about the job.

Brantford clay and what it does to a slab

Brantford sits on clay heavy enough that soil maps name a series after the city: Brantford clay loam. Clay holds water. When that water freezes under a slab, it pushes up, and a driveway on a thin base heaves and cracks.

Thicker concrete does not fix that. Depth and drainage do. We dig to stable ground, compact a granular base, and grade the driveway so melt runs off the slab and away from the house. Then we pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete and cut the joints on time, so freeze-thaw and road salt need decades to matter.

Old-ward replacements

In Eagle Place, Echo Place, Holmedale and Terrace Hill, a driveway call can mean the old slab has to come out. Much of that concrete went in before air-entrained mixes were standard, and decades of salt and freeze-thaw have done the rest.

A replacement starts with tear-out. We break out the old slab, haul it away, and fix the base problem that cracked or lifted it before we pour. Tear-out and disposal go in the written quote, not a surprise at the end.

Widening a West Brant builder driveway

Builders pour the minimum driveway that closes a sale, so widening is one of the most common calls from the Shellard Lane subdivisions. Owners also add a garage pad or a proper walkway beside it.

For a widening, we excavate and compact the extension, dowel the new slab into the old one, match the height and saw clean joints. New grey never perfectly matches weathered grey, so we show you what the seam will look like before you commit. Keep vehicles off the new section for 48 hours after the pour.

Questions

Straight answers

Why do so many Brantford driveways heave and crack?

The clay. Brantford clay loam holds water, and when that water freezes under a slab on a thin base, it lifts the concrete. We dig to stable ground, compact a granular base and grade the driveway to drain, so water does not sit under it.

Can you widen the builder driveway on our new house in West Brant?

Yes, it is one of our most common Brantford jobs. We dowel the new section into the old slab, match the height and saw clean joints. The new concrete will be a lighter grey than the old at first, and we show you the seam before you commit.

Our old driveway in Eagle Place is cracked and flaking. Can it be saved?

Once the surface is pitting and the slab has lifted, sealing slows the damage but cannot reverse it. Past a point, replacement beats another patch. We tear out and haul away the old slab, fix the base, and pour new, and we tell you honestly which side of that line yours is on.

How much does a concrete driveway cost in Brantford?

It comes down to the size of the driveway, the finish you choose, the base that Brantford's clay needs, and whether an old slab has to come out first. We do not post a flat rate that ignores all of that. You get one written number after a free site visit, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
