Concrete Walkways & Steps in Brantford

We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and porch slabs across Brantford, from century entrances in Eagle Place and Holmedale to new homes in West Brant. The city sits on clay that holds water and heaves in a hard freeze, so every entrance gets a compacted granular base, and steps that meet the house get footings below the frost line. Union-certified crews, a free written quote and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Brantford asks for entrance work in two settings. In the old wards near the river crossings, Eagle Place, Holmedale, Echo Place and Terrace Hill, the call is usually a replacement: steps heaved out of level, or a walk ground down by decades of salt. In West Brant, along the Shellard Lane corridor, owners of newer homes call for a walkway, a landing or steps to a side door.

The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the granular base and the uniform risers, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what a Brantford entrance needs in particular. The free written quote covers jobs as small as one set of steps.

Brantford clay and what it does to steps

Brantford sits on clay heavy enough that soil maps name a series after the city: Brantford clay loam. Clay holds water. When that water freezes against a walkway or under a set of steps, it lifts the concrete, and a panel that was flat in the fall can stand proud of its neighbour by spring.

The soil beside a foundation is backfill, and steps poured straight onto it settle and tip away from the door. So we dig out to firm ground, compact a granular base, and slope every walk and tread so water runs off and away from the house. Where new steps or a porch meet the house, they sit on footings below the frost line or tie into the structure.

Old-ward entrances: salt, flaking and tear-out

Many walks and steps in Eagle Place, Echo Place, Holmedale and Terrace Hill went in before air-entrained mixes were standard. Decades of road salt and freeze-thaw working on every hairline crack make the surface flake apart layer by layer.

Once the surface is pitting, sealing slows the damage but cannot reverse it. Past a point, replacement beats another patch, and we tell you honestly which side of that line yours is on. A replacement starts with tear-out and disposal of the old steps or path.

New homes in West Brant

In Wyndfield and the other newer streets off Shellard Lane, we can add a walkway, build a landing, or pour steps to a side or rear door on the same compacted base, with footings below the frost line wherever steps attach to the house.

Tell us the whole list at the site visit. Steps and walkways share a truck with any other pour on the route, so booking yours alongside a driveway or a patio cuts the mobilization cost a small pour otherwise carries alone.

Questions

Straight answers

Why did my front steps in Brantford pull away from the house?

Usually because they sit on loose backfill beside the foundation, and Brantford's clay holds water. The backfill settles, and frost in the wet clay lifts and drops the steps each winter, so they tip away from the door. A gap opens that sends water down the foundation wall. The fix is new steps on footings below the frost line, or tied into the structure, on a compacted base.

Why do older Brantford walks and steps flake apart layer by layer?

Three things stack up in the old wards: concrete poured before air-entrained mixes were standard, decades of road salt, and freeze-thaw working on every hairline crack. Sealing slows the damage once the surface pits but cannot reverse it. Past a point, replacement beats another patch.

Is one set of steps too small a job to bring a crew to Brantford?

No. We quote steps in writing like any driveway, for jobs as small as one set of steps or one cracked panel between the drive and the door. The quote is free.

How much do new concrete steps or a walkway cost in Brantford?

It depends on the job. The number of risers, the height of the whole assembly, tear-out of the old steps, whether footings are needed, the finish, and access to the entrance all change it. You get a free written quote after a site visit, and it holds unless you change the job.
