Brantford clay and the base under your patio
Brantford sits on clay heavy enough that soil maps name a series after the city: Brantford clay loam. Clay holds water. When that water freezes under a slab sitting on a shallow base, it lifts the concrete and cracks it.
So the base does the work. We build on 100 to 150 mm of compacted Granular A and grade the slab so meltwater runs off it, then pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete for freeze-thaw and road salt.
Slope the patio away from the house
We set every patio at about 2 percent away from the house and check where your downspouts discharge before the forms go in. A patio that sends water at the foundation costs far more later than it cost to pour.
Brantford's clay also pushes on foundation walls when it is saturated, and some low streets near the Grand River have a history of spring water.
