Guelph sits on drumlin clay-loam with limestone bedrock close beneath. Clay holds water and heaves a slab when frost gets under a shallow base, and the limestone is close enough in places that a deep excavation can reach rock. So when an old slab comes out here, what matters is what is under it and how the new base will be built. See our Guelph page for everything else we do in town.
The removal itself follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Guelph ground and Guelph homes change about that job.
The old Royal City: steps, parging and century-old foundations
The limestone downtown and the older streets near the Speed and Eramosa rivers are where stone and century brick homes stand. The calls there are repair, parging and waterproofing, so any tear-out near these homes is planned around the stone and the foundation beside it.
Where new concrete goes back beside stone, we lean to finishes that settle next to it. See concrete repair and resurfacing for work that saves the slab instead of removing it.
Clay-loam and shallow limestone: reading the ground once the slab is out
With the old concrete gone, the ground underneath gets read before anything is promised. Guelph clay-loam needs depth and compaction in the base to hold up against frost. In places the limestone sits close enough that a dig can reach rock, which can change how deep we go and how we handle drainage. We check that at the site visit rather than guess.
Near the rivers the water table runs higher, so an old slab there may have been sitting in damp ground. See concrete driveways in Guelph and concrete patios in Guelph for what goes back in.
South-end surveys: making room for the bigger pour
The south end has carried most of the city's growth, survey after survey of new homes where the builder leaves out much of the concrete. It is first-pour country for patios, garage pads and widened driveways, and an older or smaller piece in the way has to come out first.
Removal can be done as its own job or as day one of a replacement pour. Small jobs, like one walkway or an old shed pad, are welcome.
Straight answers
Can the old steps at my Guelph stone home be repaired instead of removed?
It depends on the steps, and we look at that at the free site visit. We tell you straight whether a repair or a replacement is the better choice for the piece in front of us.
Will you hit limestone when the old slab comes out in Guelph?
Possibly. The limestone bedrock sits close under the clay-loam in parts of Guelph, close enough that a deep excavation can reach rock. That can change how deep we dig and how we handle drainage, so we check it at the site visit rather than guess.
How much does concrete removal cost in Guelph?
The thickness of the slab, how heavily it is reinforced and how a machine reaches it set most of the cost, so a flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote at the property, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
What happens to the old concrete?
Clean concrete goes to a recycler and is crushed into road base. The mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled on their own.
