Concrete Patios in Guelph
We pour concrete patios across Guelph, from the first backyard patio in a south-end survey to a replacement behind a limestone or brick house near the Speed and Eramosa. Guelph ground is drumlin clay-loam over limestone that sits close beneath, so we build each patio on a compacted granular base and slope it away from the house. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

A Guelph patio is decided below the slab. The clay-loam under most lots holds water, and water that freezes under a thin base lifts the concrete. Under the clay, limestone sits close enough in parts of the city that a deep dig can reach rock. Both change how we prepare the ground.
The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the 100 mm slab, the compacted Granular A base and the control joints, is on our concrete patios page. This page is about what Guelph's ground and homes change. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number you pay.
Clay-loam, shallow limestone and frost
On clay ground, the patio's enemy is frost heave. The fix is depth and drainage, not a thicker slab: dig to stable ground, build the granular base up in compacted lifts, and slope the patio about 2 percent away from the house so melt and rain run off it.
South-end surveys and the older streets
In the south end, where Guelph has grown hardest, the patio is often the job the builder left for the homeowner.
Near the downtown and the rivers, the houses are older and many are limestone or brick. There, a new patio often starts with taking out an old cracked slab and finding what failed under it. A bright new slab can look out of place beside grey stone, so exposed aggregate or a warmer-toned broom finish often sits better. The low streets near the water also hold a higher water table, so the slope away from the foundation matters even more.
Finish, cure and when to book
Broom finish gives grip and is the most affordable. Exposed aggregate adds texture. Stamped concrete adds pattern and colour; see our stamped and decorative concrete page if you are weighing it. Whatever the finish, the slab is 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the mix made for freeze-thaw winters.
Foot traffic can go on a new patio after 24 to 48 hours, furniture after about a week, and sealing waits until about 28 days. Guelph jobs book into our regular Waterloo Region routes on the Cambridge and Kitchener side in season.
Straight answers
Does Guelph's clay ground make a concrete patio harder to build?
It makes the base matter more. The drumlin clay-loam holds water, and frost under a thin base lifts a slab. We dig to stable ground, compact a granular base in lifts, and slope the patio away from the house so water does not sit under it.
Will you hit limestone when you dig for a patio in Guelph?
Sometimes. The limestone sits close under the clay-loam in parts of Guelph, and it can change how deep we dig. We check the ground at the free site visit, and anything it changes goes in the written quote.
We live in an older stone house near downtown. Can a new patio suit it?
Yes. We take out the old slab if there is one, fix what failed under it, and pour a new patio sloped away from the house. Exposed aggregate or a warmer-toned broom finish sits better beside grey limestone than a bright plain slab.
How much does a concrete patio cost in Guelph?
Size, the finish you choose, access to the backyard, and the base the ground needs all move the number. Broom finish is the most affordable, exposed aggregate is a step up, and stamped work costs more. Clay and shallow rock can both add base work. We give you a written quote after a free site visit, and the number we give you is the number you pay.
