Concrete Slabs & Garage Pads in Guelph

We pour shed pads, hot tub pads and detached garage slabs across Guelph, from the south-end surveys to the older streets near the Speed and Eramosa. Guelph ground is drumlin clay-loam over limestone that sits close beneath in places, so every pad gets excavation to stable ground and a compacted granular base before any concrete goes in. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

A pad lives or dies below the surface. In Guelph the clay-loam under most lots holds water, and water that freezes under a thin base lifts a slab or tilts it. In parts of the city the limestone is close enough that a deep dig can reach rock. Both change how we prepare the ground for a pad.

The full build, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the compacted Granular A base, mesh or rebar by load, is on our concrete slabs and garage pads page. This page covers what Guelph's ground and homes change. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number you pay.

Clay-loam, shallow limestone and a floating pad

A detached garage pad in Southern Ontario is usually a floating slab, with no deep foundation, so the whole pad rides any frost movement as one piece. On Guelph's clay-loam that makes the base the most important part. We dig to stable ground, compact the granular base in lifts, and thicken the edges where the walls will sit.

Where limestone sits close under the clay, a deep excavation can reach rock, and water moving through the stone is why parts of the city have dealt with sinkholes. It is not usually a problem for a pad, but it can change how deep we dig and how we handle drainage. We read the ground at the free site visit and put anything it changes in the written quote.

South-end surveys: the pad the builder left out

The south end is where Guelph has grown hardest, survey after survey of new homes that close without the extras.

A hot tub pad has to be dead level and reinforced for the load, because a filled tub with people in it weighs two to three tonnes. We pour it a little larger than the tub's footprint so the steps and service panels land on concrete.

Older streets near the rivers

The Speed and Eramosa rivers meet in the middle of the city, and the low streets near the water carry a higher water table than the higher ground. A pad there needs a base that drains and a surface sloped so water leaves it. If an old cracked pad is in the way, we take it out and look for what failed under it first; see our concrete removal and demolition page.

Garage floors, sheds and permits

A shed pad takes welded wire mesh. A garage or shop floor carries a vehicle, so it gets a 10M rebar grid at a 400 mm spacing and a slab 125 to 150 mm thick. A light resin shed does fine on a compacted gravel pad, and we will say so at the visit rather than sell concrete you do not need.

Most detached garages need a building permit, and the cutoff for sheds varies by municipality. We flag which side your project lands on at the site visit. Anchor bolts set in the wet concrete hold a garage's bottom plate best, and the floor should slope toward the door so melt off the car finds its way out. Guelph jobs book into our regular Waterloo Region routes on the Cambridge and Kitchener side in season.

Questions

Straight answers

Does Guelph's clay ground change how you build a garage pad?

It makes the base matter more. The drumlin clay-loam holds water, and frost under a thin base can lift or tilt a floating slab. We dig to stable ground, compact a granular base in lifts, and thicken the edges where the walls will sit.

Will you hit limestone when you dig for a pad in Guelph?

Sometimes. The limestone sits close under the clay-loam in parts of Guelph, and it can change how deep we dig. We check the ground at the free site visit, and anything it changes goes in the written quote.

Do I need concrete for a shed in Guelph, or will gravel do?

A light resin shed does fine on a compacted gravel pad, and we will tell you so. Concrete is the right answer once the shed is a workshop, stores anything heavy, or needs anchoring against wind.

How much does a concrete garage pad cost in Guelph?

Size, thickness, the reinforcement the load needs, access to the site and the base the ground needs all move the number. A garage floor costs more than a shed pad because it is thicker and carries more steel, and clay or shallow rock can add base work. We give you a written quote after a free site visit, and the number we give you is the number you pay.
