Concrete Walkways & Steps in Guelph

We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps, porches and entrances across Guelph, from a settled step on a limestone house near the Speed to a first front path in a south-end survey. Guelph ground is drumlin clay-loam with limestone close beneath, so steps that attach to a house get footings below the frost line and a compacted granular base. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Steps and walkways are the part of a Guelph house people touch every day, and the ground under them decides how long they last. Much of the city sits on drumlin clay-loam. It holds water, and water that freezes under a shallow base lifts a slab or tips a set of steps away from the door.

Guelph is also a city of two housing ages. The old Royal City core, built of local limestone and century brick, has stone steps and porches that have settled over many winters. The south end has newer homes, where the concrete a builder leaves out is often the job. We quote both in writing, from one cracked panel to a full entrance rebuild.

The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the 100 mm walkway, the footings and the riser heights, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what Guelph's ground and homes change.

Clay-loam, shallow limestone and the footing

Steps that attach to a house get footings below the frost line, about 1.2 metres down, or are tied into the foundation wall where that is the sounder detail. On Guelph clay-loam this matters, because the soil beside a foundation is backfill, never as solid as undisturbed ground.

Limestone bedrock sits close under the clay in parts of the city, close enough that a deep excavation can reach rock. A footing hole is a deep dig, so we read the ground at the free site visit instead of guessing, and we say before the work starts if the footing detail has to change.

Old stone entrances and newer south-end paths

On the limestone and brick houses of the old core, a new set of steps sits beside cut stone. A bright white slab argues with grey limestone, so we lean to a broom finish or exposed aggregate that settles beside it, and keep the scale and rise of the original steps where we can. Low streets near the Speed and Eramosa rivers carry a higher water table, so the slope at the foot of the steps matters more there.

In the south-end surveys the job is usually first-time or add-on work: a wider front walkway, a side path to the backyard, a landing that was left out. Treating the entrance as one project lets us set the grades together.

Repair, relevel or rebuild?

Not every worn or sunken step needs replacing. Sound steps that have settled can sometimes be lifted back into position once the water problem is fixed. A porch with spalled corners and a sound slab can often be resurfaced. Steps that are cracked through, or that have taken water into their body for years, get rebuilt on proper footings.

We tell you which one you have at the free site visit. The written quote names each piece so you can compare it with anyone else's.

Questions

Straight answers

Why are my front steps in Guelph pulling away from the house?

Steps poured onto backfill beside a foundation settle and tip, because the soil beside a foundation is backfill, never as solid as undisturbed ground. The fix is to relevel or rebuild the steps on footings below the frost line, and to move the water that caused it.

Do you hit limestone when you dig footings for steps in Guelph?

Sometimes. Limestone bedrock sits close beneath the clay-loam in parts of Guelph, so a deep footing hole can reach rock. We check the ground at the site visit and tell you before work starts if it changes the footing detail.

Can new steps suit our older limestone house?

Yes. We lean to finishes that settle beside grey stone, like a broom finish or exposed aggregate, and on repairs we keep the rise and scale of the original steps where we can.

Can you rebuild the walkway and steps together?

Yes. Doing them as one project lets us set the path grade, landing height, riser spacing and drainage together. The written quote can show the walkway and the steps separately.

How much do new concrete steps cost in Guelph?

Steps are quoted by the job, not by area. The number of risers, the total height, the footings, the drainage work and the tear-out of the old set drive the cost. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
