Concrete Patios in Cambridge
My Concrete Pros pours concrete patios across Cambridge, in Galt, Preston, Hespeler and the newer surveys between them. Near the Grand and Speed rivers the job is about water and drainage. On the sandy ground away from the rivers it is about holding the base at the slab edge. On a new lot it is about letting the fill settle first. Quotes are free and written, and the labour carries a lifetime warranty.

Cambridge is three old towns joined in 1973, and a patio here depends on which part of the city your yard is in. Old Galt and Preston sit low where the Grand and Speed rivers meet, with a higher water table and century homes. Away from the rivers the ground runs to the sand and gravel of the moraine. The newer subdivisions around Galt, Preston and Hespeler sit on disturbed fill. See our Cambridge page for everything else we do in the city.
A patio is a drainage job that is also a nice place to sit. We slope the slab about 2 percent away from the house, use 32 MPa air-entrained concrete for the freeze-thaw winters, and pour it on a compacted granular base. The full method is on our concrete patios page. This page covers what Cambridge ground and Cambridge homes change about that job.
Near the rivers: send the water away from an old foundation
Down near the Grand and the Speed, in the cores of old Galt and Preston, the water table is higher and the ground takes on more damp. Many homes here are century stone or brick, and their foundations already work hard against that water. A patio that is flat, or that has settled toward the house, sends every rain and spring melt at the wall.
Before we pour beside an older home, we look at where the downspouts empty and how the yard drains. We set the slope away from the house and plan the base so water cannot sit under the slab, freeze and lift it. If the wall already takes on water, we tell you, and we can look at basement waterproofing in Cambridge before a patio goes in beside the problem.
Sandy moraine ground: hold the edge
Away from the rivers, much of Cambridge sits on moraine sand and gravel. Sand drains well, so frost heaves a slab less here than on clay. But sand also washes out, and a patio edge with nothing holding its base can undermine itself over a few seasons. We contain the base at the edges and steps and steer runoff away from them, so the water that drains through the sand does not carry the base with it.
New lots in Galt, Preston and Hespeler: let the ground settle
The newer subdivisions ringing all three former towns are first-pour country. The builder leaves a bare backyard, and owners reach the patio once they reach the landscaping stage. But subdivision ground is disturbed fill, and the backfill along a new foundation keeps moving for a year or two. A patio poured too early can sink at the house edge and tip toward the wall.
So on a new lot we usually wait until the builder has set the final grade and the lot has had a season to settle, and we compact the base properly rather than trust it. Booking the quote in spring usually gets a better date once the summer pour season fills.
Finishes beside stone homes, and gazebo pads
In the stone streets of Galt, a bright white slab can fight a grey stone house. We lean to finishes that sit with it, like exposed aggregate or a warmer-toned broom. If you want a stamped patio, see our stamped and decorative concrete page.
If the patio will carry a gazebo, bring the gazebo plan to the site visit. We plan the base, reinforcement, edge thickness and anchors for that structure and quote the patio and the pad as one job. Cambridge books into our regular weekly schedule in season.
Straight answers
Our Galt patio near the river has settled toward the house. Can you replace it?
Yes. A patio that tips toward the wall sends water at the foundation, so the fix starts under the slab. We take out the old patio, rebuild a compacted granular base, and pour a new slab sloped about 2 percent away from the house. If the wall already takes on water, we tell you before we pour.
We bought a new build on the edge of Hespeler. When can we pour a patio?
Usually after the builder sets the final grade and the lot has had a season to settle. The backfill beside a new foundation keeps moving for a year or two, and a patio poured too early can sink and tip toward the wall. Ask for the quote in spring, because summer dates fill.
What finish suits a patio beside an old stone house in Galt?
Exposed aggregate or a warmer-toned broom finish usually sits better with grey stone than a bright white slab. We can talk through finishes on the site visit.
How much does a concrete patio cost in Cambridge?
Size, finish, the base the ground needs, access for the concrete truck and any steps or levels set the cost, so a flat number would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
