What the ground here does to concrete
Aurora sits up on the Oak Ridges Moraine, and the moraine is sand and gravel, not the clay that covers most of the area we work. That ground drains fast. Meltwater soaks straight down into the aquifers under the town instead of pooling against a wall, so a slab here heaves less in a hard winter than the same slab would on clay a few concessions south. The trade-off is that loose sand will not hold a base on its own, so the granular under your driveway has to be contained and compacted properly or it migrates and the slab settles unevenly.
