Concrete Removal & Demolition in Aurora
We break out and haul away old driveways, patios, walkways, steps and slabs across Aurora. In the heritage core around Yonge and Wellington, removal is often a settled step or a driveway on its third life coming out for repair or replacement. In the newer east-end surveys and the south-end estate lots, it is more often a builder's strip or a small pad making room for a bigger pour. Quotes are free and written, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized.

Aurora sits on the Oak Ridges Moraine, which is sand and gravel, not the clay under most of the area we work. That ground drains fast, but loose sand will not hold a base on its own. So when an old slab comes out here, what matters is what is under it and whether the new base will be contained and compacted. See our Aurora page for everything else we do in town.
The removal itself follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Aurora ground and Aurora homes change about that job.
The heritage core: steps, aprons and old driveways
The streets off Yonge near Wellington and through Aurora Heights hold homes that have stood a long time. Settled front steps, cracked aprons and a driveway on its third life are what we see most. Some steps can be levelled or rebuilt rather than torn out, and we tell you which, so you do not pay for a tear-out you do not need.
Moraine sand: rebuilding the base after the tear-out
Sand drains fast, so frost heave is less of a worry here than on clay. The catch is that loose sand shifts. After the old concrete is out, we check the granular that is left and contain and compact it before anything new goes in, so the new slab does not settle in ruts. That is decided on site, lot by lot.
Down in the low pockets near the Holland River headwaters, the water table runs high even though the higher sand stays dry. If an old slab sat in one of those pockets, we read the lot before we promise a base. See concrete driveways in Aurora and concrete patios in Aurora for what goes back in.
Newer surveys and estate lots: making room for the bigger pour
In Bayview Northeast and the Bayview Wellington surveys, a builder often pours the garage strip and leaves the rest for the owner. Removal there is usually a narrow driveway coming out ahead of a wider one, or a small pad making way for a proper patio. The estate lots in the south end have room for long drives and pool decks, so a larger old pad can come out at the same time.
Doing the tear-out and the new pour with one crew means the base is rebuilt while the ground is open and you pay for one trip, not two. Aurora is a planned-route town for us, booked on dates, not a same-day call. Small jobs, like one walkway or an old shed pad, are welcome.
Straight answers
Can the old steps at my heritage-core home be repaired instead of removed?
Often, yes. Settled steps can usually be levelled or rebuilt rather than torn out. We tell you straight when a repair will hold and when replacing the piece is the better choice, and we say so at the free site visit.
Does the base need to change after old concrete comes out on Oak Ridges Moraine sand?
Yes. The sand drains fast, but loose granular will not hold a base by itself. We check what is left under the old slab, then contain and compact it so the new slab does not settle unevenly. That is decided on site.
How much does concrete removal cost in Aurora?
The thickness of the slab, how much mesh and rebar is in it, and how a machine reaches it set most of the cost. A flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
What happens to the old concrete?
Clean concrete goes to a recycler and is crushed into road base. The mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled on their own.
