Stamped & Decorative Concrete in Aurora

We pour stamped and decorative concrete across Aurora: patios, pool decks, front walks and driveway borders in slate, flagstone and cobblestone patterns. The town sits on Oak Ridges Moraine sand, which drains fast but will not hold a base on its own, so the base is contained and compacted before any colour goes down. Union-certified crews do the colour and stamping, the labour carries a lifetime warranty, and the written quote is free.

Aurora reads in two halves, and stamped concrete means something different in each. Around the heritage core off Yonge and Wellington, where the 1862 Hillary House anchors the old streets, the pattern and colour have to sit beside older brick and stone. In the newer surveys of Bayview Northeast and along the Bayview Wellington streets, the back patio is often the pour the builder left for the owner, and a stamped finish gives it some character.

Stamped concrete suits both because it is one continuous surface, coloured and pressed to read as stone. What it asks for in return is a sound base and a sealer coat kept up through the winters. On Aurora's moraine ground, the base is where most of the care goes.

The whole method, the pattern families, the two-layer colour, the mix and where the joints get cut, is on our stamped and decorative concrete page. This page stays on what stamping an Aurora property asks of the job. The quote is free and written, and the number on it is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.

Moraine sand: contain the base before the pattern

Aurora sits up on the Oak Ridges Moraine, which is sand and gravel, not the clay under most of the area we work. Meltwater soaks straight down, so a slab here heaves less in a hard winter than the same slab on clay.

The catch is that loose sand will not hold a base by itself. If the granular under the slab is not contained and compacted, it shifts and the slab settles unevenly. A crack or a dip shows more on a patterned face than on a plain broom finish, so we get the base right first. Then we pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the mix for slabs that live with freeze-thaw winters.

Choosing a pattern for the heritage core

On the older streets, the house sets the rules. Ashlar slate and random flagstone read as stone beside older brick without competing with it, while a busy cobblestone can overpower a small front walk.

In Bayview Northeast and the Bayview Wellington surveys, a stamped patio, a stamped side walkway or a stamped border around a plain broom-finish driveway does most of the visual work for a small share of the square footage.

Low lots near the Holland River headwaters

The east branch of the Holland River rises just south of town and runs north through the Arboretum. The moraine feeds those headwaters, so the water table sits high in the low pockets near the stream valley and the wetlands. A house on the high sand stays dry, and a house in one of those pockets can take on seepage in spring.

At the site visit we read what the ground on your lot does, and set the base and the slope of the slab for it. If the basement beside the planned patio already gets damp, we tell you before we pour, and you can read about basement waterproofing in Aurora first.

Sealer, anti-slip and booking

The colour on stamped concrete lasts only as long as the sealer over it, so we put a written resealing schedule in with the quote. The sealer carries an anti-slip additive, because a sealed stamped surface is slick when wet.

Aurora is well north in York Region, reached up the 404, so we group jobs here into planned trips and give you firm dates rather than a same-day promise. We reply to every request within one business day.

Questions

Straight answers

Does Aurora's sandy ground cause problems for stamped concrete?

It is manageable if the base is right. Moraine sand drains fast, so a slab heaves less with frost than it would on clay. But loose sand will not hold a base by itself, so the granular has to be contained and compacted or the slab settles unevenly, which shows more on a stamped face. We build the base to suit sand, and decide it on site.

What stamped pattern suits an older home near Yonge and Wellington?

The quieter cut-stone looks usually sit best. Ashlar slate and random flagstone read as stone beside older brick without competing with it, while a busy cobblestone can overpower a small front walk.

Can you add a stamped patio or border to a newer Aurora house?

Yes. A stamped patio, a stamped side walkway, or a stamped border around a plain broom-finish driveway all work on a newer exterior.

How much does stamped concrete cost in Aurora?

Size, pattern, colour, access and the state of the base set the number. You get one free written quote after a site visit, and the number on it is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.

How do I keep stamped concrete looking good?

Keep the sealer up. The colour lasts only as long as the sealer over it, and we put a written resealing schedule in with the quote. The sealer carries an anti-slip additive, and whoever reseals it later should use one too.
