What the ground here does to concrete
Lake Erie writes the rules here. It is the shallowest of the Great Lakes and the quickest to freeze, and last winter its ice cover pushed past 95 percent, something it had not managed in about twenty years. A shore that freezes like that throws spray over everything near the water, and a sprayed surface rides the freeze-thaw cycle far more times a season than concrete a few streets inland. Pours near the lake get specified for it: 32 MPa air-entrained mix, slopes that shed water fast, and sealing on exposed faces.
Under the spray sits sand. The beach never quite ends where the lawns begin, and sandy ground drains quickly but erodes just as quickly, so the lakeside failure pattern is undermining: walkway edges, patio corners and step footings with the ground rinsed from beneath them. Does lake spray really shorten the life of concrete near the harbour?
Yes, measurably. Spray keeps surfaces wet through winter, and a wet surface freezes and thaws every time the temperature crosses zero, which on the Erie shore is constantly. Unprotected concrete pits and flakes years early. The defence is in the spec: air-entrained 32 MPa mix that gives freezing water somewhere to expand, slope that drains the surface fast, and a sealer maintained on the lake-facing side. Same physics as road salt damage, delivered by the lake for free.
Can you replace the interlock around our pool with a real concrete deck?
We do it regularly. Interlock around Port Dover pools tends to shift and open joints as the sand bedding migrates, which is exactly the local soil doing what it does. A poured pool deck takes that movement out of the picture: one structure, broom or stamped finish for grip, sloped away from the pool, with the old pavers removed and the base rebuilt before anything is poured.
