Concrete Removal & Demolition in Port Dover

We break out and haul away old driveways, patios, walkways, steps and slabs across Port Dover. On the cottage lanes and older blocks, a slab has usually been through decades of lake spray and freeze, and the sandy ground under it may have washed out from beneath its edges, so removal is day one of a replacement. Union-certified crews, a free written quote with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and a lifetime warranty on labour when we pour the new concrete.

Port Dover is hard on concrete in its own way. Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes and freezes fast, and near the water, spray keeps a surface wet all winter, so it freezes and thaws far more often than a slab a few streets inland. Under the lawns sits sand, which drains quickly but erodes just as quickly. See our Port Dover page for everything else we do in town.

The removal itself follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Port Dover ground and Port Dover homes change about that job.

Cottage lanes and older blocks: find out why the old slab failed

The cottage lanes near the beach and the older blocks up from the harbour hold driveways, steps and walkways that have been through many winters of salt and freeze. When a slab has pitted, flaked or dropped at an edge, taking it out is the easy part. The useful part is what we see once it is out.

In sandy ground, the usual failure is the soil rinsing out from under a walkway edge, a patio corner or a step footing. With the old concrete gone, we look at the base and at where roof and surface water go. If the ground has washed out, we rebuild a contained, compacted base before anything new goes in, so the new slab does not fail the same way.

Spray-worn patios and pool surrounds

Near the water, the surfaces that suffer most are patios, steps and anything that takes spray. When one has to come out, we cut clean edges where it meets concrete that stays, and plan the machine path to spare the lawn and the house.

Doing the tear-out and the new pour with one crew means the base is rebuilt while the ground is open, and you deal with one team, not two. See concrete driveways in Port Dover and concrete patios in Port Dover for what goes back in.

Close to the bank: check before you dig

Norfolk County maps shoreline hazards, and it flags many eroding spots around Port Dover. If your slab sits close to the bank, look at that mapping before you plan new work there. We tell you at the site visit what we see on the ground.

Booking removal in Port Dover

A small machine needs about a 36 inch gate. Where it cannot get through, the concrete is broken by hand and carried out, which takes longer. We decide the machine path at the site visit. Small jobs, like one walkway or an old shed pad, are welcome.

Cottage owners who are away during the week can book the work for a time that suits them. We confirm the schedule before we start, and we reply to every request within one business day.

Questions

Straight answers

Why did the edge of my Port Dover slab drop, and will a new one do the same?

Port Dover's sandy ground drains quickly but erodes quickly, and a common failure is the ground washing out from under an edge. When we take the old slab out, we check the base and the drainage, and fix what moved it before the new pour. A new slab on the same washed-out base would fail the same way.

Can you take out concrete in a backyard with a narrow gate?

Yes. Our smallest machines clear about a 36 inch gate. If there is no machine access, we break the concrete by hand and carry it out. It takes longer, so we put it in the written quote after the site visit.

How much does concrete removal cost in Port Dover?

The thickness of the slab, how much mesh and rebar is in it, and how a machine reaches it set most of the cost. A flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.

What happens to the old concrete?

Clean concrete goes to a recycler and is crushed into road base. The mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled on their own.
