Concrete Patios in Port Dover

We pour concrete patios across Port Dover, from cottage backyards near the beach to the newer bungalows at Dover Coast. Near the lake, a patio has to live with Lake Erie spray and sandy ground that washes out from under its edges, so we build on a contained, compacted base, pour air-entrained 32 MPa concrete and slope the slab about 2 percent away from the house. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Port Dover is a patio town. Lakeside lots want outdoor living, and the newer builds often want the patio the builder never included. But the lake is hard on concrete. Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes and the quickest to freeze, and near the water, spray keeps a surface wet through the winter, so it freezes and thaws far more often than a slab a few streets inland.

Under the lawns sits sand. It drains quickly, but it also erodes quickly, and the usual lakeside failure is a patio corner with the ground rinsed out from beneath it. The full method, the mix, the 100 mm slab, the compacted base and the control joints, is on our concrete patios page. This page is about what Port Dover changes.

Sand under the patio: contain the base, send the water away

We compact the granular base, contain it at the edges so it cannot wash out from the side, and send roof and surface water somewhere harmless. Before the forms go in, we plan with you where the patio's runoff and the downspouts go.

Close to the bank, check before you build. Norfolk County maps shoreline hazards, and it flags many eroding spots around Port Dover.

Spray, freeze-thaw and a surface that keeps its grip

On a lakeside lot, we specify the patio for the spray: air-entrained concrete that gives freezing water room to expand, a slope that sheds water fast, and a sealer on the exposed surface. Seal a new patio at about 28 days, and keep the sealer up on the lake-facing side.

A broom finish gives good grip and is the most affordable. Exposed aggregate adds texture, and stamped concrete adds pattern and colour; see our stamped and decorative concrete page if you are weighing it. You can walk on a new patio after 24 to 48 hours, and put furniture on it after about a week.

Cottage backyards, the older blocks and Dover Coast

On the cottage lanes and the older blocks up from the harbour, a new patio often starts with tear-out: we break out the old slab, fix the base that let it fail, and pour fresh. Pouring new concrete on the same failed base only buys a few more years of the same problem.

At Dover Coast and the other new builds, the usual job is a first patio. Either way, the quote is written and names the tear-out, the base, the slab and the finish, so you can compare it with anyone else's.

Questions

Straight answers

A corner of our Port Dover patio has dropped. Why?

On Port Dover's sandy ground, a dropped corner usually means water has washed the sand out from under that part of the slab, often from a downspout or a low spot in the grading. A patch does not fix that. A lasting fix rebuilds the base and sends the water away first. We look at the slab and the water at the free site visit.

Can you replace the interlock around our pool with a concrete deck?

Yes. Interlock around Port Dover pools tends to shift and open joints as the sand bedding moves. A poured deck is one structure, with a broom or stamped finish for grip, sloped away from the pool, with the old pavers removed and the base rebuilt before anything is poured.

We are only at the cottage on weekends. Can the work happen while we are away?

Yes. After one walkthrough and a written scope, most exterior jobs run fine without you on site. We confirm the schedule before the crew comes.

How much does a concrete patio cost in Port Dover?

Size, the finish you choose, access to the backyard, the tear-out of any old slab and the base the ground needs all move the number. Broom finish is the most affordable, exposed aggregate is a step up, and stamped work costs more. We give you a written quote after a free site visit, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
