Concrete Driveways in Port Dover
We pour new and replacement concrete driveways across Port Dover, built for what the lake does to them: Lake Erie spray that adds freeze-thaw cycles, sandy ground that washes out from under an edge, and older cottage lots where the old drive has to come out first. Union-certified crews, a free written quote that holds, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Port Dover is hard on a driveway in its own way. Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes and freezes fast, and near the water, spray keeps a surface wet all winter, so it freezes and thaws far more often than a slab a few streets inland. Under the lawns sits sand. It drains quickly, but it also erodes quickly, and the way a driveway fails here is the ground rinsing out from under its edges.
So a Port Dover driveway is decided in the base, the mix and the drainage, not on pour day. We contain and compact the base, pour air-entrained 32 MPa concrete, and slope the slab so water leaves it fast. The full spec lives on our concrete driveways page; this page is about what a Port Dover driveway needs in particular.
Sandy ground: contain the base, send water away
We build the granular base compacted in lifts, keep it contained at the edges, and grade the driveway so water drains away from the slab and the house.
Close to the bank, check before you build. Norfolk County maps shoreline hazards, and it flags many eroding spots around Port Dover.
Lake Erie spray and the salt season
On the lake streets, a driveway takes the extra freeze-thaw cycles that spray brings, then road salt on top. That is why every driveway we pour is 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the standard for slabs that live with freeze-thaw and salt. A broom or exposed aggregate finish gives grip in ice season, and sealing the slab in the spring helps the surface last.
Cottage lots, older blocks and Dover Coast
On the cottage lanes and the older blocks up from the harbour, a replacement starts with tear-out: we break out the old slab, haul it away, fix the base that let it fail, and pour fresh. At the newer builds around Dover Coast, the work is often a widened drive or a pad the builder never included.
A new entrance onto a County road, or a change to an existing one, goes through Norfolk County's entrance permit process.
Straight answers
The edge of our Port Dover driveway has cracked and dropped. Why?
Port Dover's sandy ground drains quickly but erodes quickly, and the way a driveway fails here is the ground washing out from under its edges. Patching the crack does not fix that. A lasting repair or replacement fixes the base and grades the driveway so water drains away first.
Do we need a permit to widen our driveway in Port Dover?
If the change touches where the driveway meets a County road, Norfolk County's entrance permit process applies, with a sketch of the entrance and its location staked on site. Work that stays on your own lot, inside the existing entrance, usually does not touch that process.
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Port Dover?
Size sets the floor, then the finish, the base the ground needs, access, and whether an old slab has to come out. On a lakeside lot the exposure can change the prep. We do not post a flat rate that would only mislead you. A firm written quote comes after a free site visit, and the number on it is the number you pay unless you change the job.
