Concrete Driveways in Caledon

We pour new and replacement concrete driveways across Caledon, from subdivision drives in Bolton to long approach driveways on rural and estate lots. The base is set to the ground the lot sits on: fast-draining sand and gravel on the Oak Ridges Moraine, or clay that holds water on the low ground. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour. Caledon books into planned trips with firm dates.

A Caledon driveway can be two very different jobs. In Bolton and the village cores, it is a town driveway: a subdivision drive, often with a garage pad or a walkway beside it. Out on the farms and estate lots between the villages, it is a long approach driveway off a concession or county road, with far more concrete, base and forming to plan.

Either way, the ground decides how long it lasts. We excavate to stable ground, compact a Granular A base, and pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete for freeze-thaw and salt. The full spec lives on our concrete driveways page; this page is about what a Caledon driveway needs in particular.

Moraine sand on one lot, wet clay on the next

Caledon sits where the Niagara Escarpment and the Oak Ridges Moraine meet. The moraine is a deep mix of sand and gravel that drains fast. Lower down, near the creeks and river flats, the ground is often heavy clay that holds water.

On moraine sand, frost heave is a smaller worry. The risk is that loose sand washes out or shifts under the slab, so we contain and compact the base and grade the driveway so runoff leaves the concrete. On clay and wet low ground, water under a thin base freezes and lifts the slab, so the base goes deeper and is compacted in lifts.

Long rural approach driveways

A long approach driveway can cross more than one kind of ground. One stretch can be sandy moraine soil and the next wet clay near a ditch or a low spot. We walk the whole run, check where water goes, and set the base depth to the worst ground on the line, not the best.

Where trucks or trailers park, we pour 125 mm instead of 100 mm. A pad for a shop, a barn or a detached garage next to the driveway can go in the same job.

Bolton and the village cores

For a replacement in Bolton's subdivisions or the older village cores, we break out the old slab, haul it away, fix the base problem that cracked or lifted it, and pour fresh. A walkway, front steps or a garage pad can be poured at the same time.

A new slab needs vehicles kept off for 48 hours at least, and a full week before heavy trucks or trailers. Because Caledon books into planned trips, we give you the pour date in advance so you can plan around it.

Questions

Straight answers

Our Caledon lot is on sandy moraine ground. Is that good or bad for a concrete driveway?

Both. Sand and gravel drain fast, so there is less frost heave than on clay. But loose sand can wash out or shift under a slab if the base is not contained and the water is not graded away. So on moraine lots we focus on a compacted, contained base and on moving runoff away from the concrete.

We have a long driveway off a concession road. Can you pour all of it in concrete?

Yes. A long approach takes more base prep, grading and forming than a short town driveway, so it is a bigger job to plan and book. We walk the whole line, check drainage, and set the base to the worst ground on it. Where trucks or trailers park, the slab goes to 125 mm.

Our old driveway in Bolton has cracked and heaved. Can you replace it?

Yes. We tear out and haul away the old slab, find what lifted it, and fix that before we pour. The new driveway goes on an excavated, compacted Granular A base, graded to drain. Tear-out and disposal go in the written quote.

How much does a concrete driveway cost in Caledon?

Size, the length of a rural approach, the base the ground needs, access, the finish, and whether an old slab has to come out all set the number. We do not post a flat rate that would only mislead you. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number we give you is the number you pay.
