Concrete Walkways & Steps in Pickering
We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and entrances across Pickering, from settled steps on the older lakeshore streets to first walkways on new Seaton lots. Steps that meet the house sit on footings below the frost line, and every path gets a compacted granular base and a slope that sheds water. Union-certified crews, a free written quote and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Pickering asks for entrance work in two settings. In the lakeshore neighbourhoods, Bay Ridges, West Shore, Rosebank, Dunbarton and Liverpool, the older homes call for repair or replacement, such as front steps that have settled. In Seaton and the newer surveys in the north, owners of new homes call for a walkway, a landing or steps to a side door. See our Pickering page for everything else we do in the city.
The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the granular base and the uniform risers, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what Pickering ground and Pickering homes change about an entrance. The free written quote covers jobs as small as one set of steps.
Lakeshore Pickering: settled steps and tired walks
Much of the south end was built from the 1950s through the 1970s, before walls were sealed to today's standard. The soil beside a foundation is backfill, and steps poured straight onto it settle and tip away from the door. That opens a gap that sends water down the foundation wall.
The south end sits on the old Lake Iroquois shoreline plain, where the soil runs to clay near the water and the water table sits high. So we look at where water goes before we pour: the slope of the walk and each tread, and the downspouts that empty onto it. A rebuilt entrance starts with tear-out and disposal of the old steps, then firm ground, a compacted granular base and, wherever the steps attach to the house, footings below the frost line. If the basement already takes on water, see basement waterproofing in Pickering.
Seaton and the new surveys: let the ground settle first
Seaton is built on glacial till that keeps settling after the builder backfills, and it heaves when frost reaches under a thin slab. A walkway or landing poured too early can sink at the house edge and tip toward the wall.
That is why we check the base before pouring a walkway or a landing, and why many owners wait until after the first spring to see how water moves across the yard. We can add a path to a side or rear door, build a landing, or pour steps on the same compacted base. Tell us the whole list at the site visit: a walkway rides on the same trip as a driveway or a patio.
Small jobs and booking
Pickering sits at the far west edge of Durham, a long drive from our home routes. A set of steps, a cracked walkway panel or a front landing rides along on the planned trips into the area, and we give you a firm date, not a same-week promise. Small jobs still get a written quote and still carry the lifetime warranty on labour. We reply to every request within one business day.
Straight answers
Why have my front steps in Bay Ridges or West Shore settled or pulled away from the house?
Usually because they sit on loose backfill beside the foundation. The backfill settles, and the steps tip away from the door, opening a gap that sends water down the foundation wall. The fix is new steps on footings below the frost line, or tied into the structure, on a compacted base.
We just moved into a new build in Seaton. When should we pour a walkway?
Usually after the lot has settled and you can see how water runs across it, often after the first spring. Seaton's glacial till keeps settling after the builder backfills, so we check the base before pouring.
Is one set of steps too small a job for a crew to come to Pickering?
No. Settled steps and a cracked walkway panel ride along on the planned trips into Durham, like bigger driveway and patio work. We quote steps in writing like any driveway, and the quote is free.
How much do new concrete steps or a walkway cost in Pickering?
The number of risers, the height of the whole assembly, tear-out of the old steps, whether footings are needed, the finish and access to the entrance all change it. You get a free written quote after a site visit, and it holds unless you change the job.
