Concrete Removal & Demolition in Pickering

We break out and haul away old driveways, patios, walkways, steps and slabs across Pickering. In the lakeshore neighbourhoods like Bay Ridges, West Shore and Rosebank, an older slab often sits on clay with a high water table, so removal is day one of a replacement. In Seaton and the newer surveys, we plan the removal around what goes back in. Quotes are free and written, with the breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized.

Pickering has two kinds of ground. The south end sits on the old Lake Iroquois shoreline plain, where the soil runs to clay near the water and the water table sits high under the older streets. Clay holds melt and rain against what sits on it, and frost lifts what sits on the clay. North of there, Seaton is built on glacial till that heaves when frost reaches under a thin slab. See our Pickering page for everything else we do in the city.

The removal follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler, not a landfill. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Pickering ground and Pickering homes change about that job.

Bay Ridges, West Shore, Rosebank and Dunbarton: find out why the old slab moved

The lakeshore neighbourhoods hold the older stock, much of it built from the 1950s through the 1970s. A driveway or step poured then rarely got the base depth we build to now. Once frost gets under a thin slab near the lake, it heaves and cracks, and water in the crack opens it wider each winter. Past a point, repair stops paying and the slab has to come out.

Taking it out is the easy part. The useful part is what we see once it is gone. The base is rebuilt while the ground is open, compacted in lifts and graded for drainage. If the slab sloped toward an older foundation, we tell you, and we can look at basement waterproofing in Pickering while the ground beside the wall is open.

Seaton and the newer surveys: plan the tear-out around the new pour

Seaton is a new community on land that was farm fields a few years ago, and its houses arrive with the strip of concrete the builder poured. When a narrow driveway or a small pad has to come out for a bigger one, we plan the machine path and the new base at the site visit.

Doing the tear-out and the new pour with one crew means the base is rebuilt while the ground is open, and you pay for one trip, not two. See concrete driveways in Pickering and concrete patios in Pickering for what goes back in.

Booking removal in Pickering

Pickering sits at the far west edge of Durham, a long drive from our home routes, so we are not minutes away and will not pretend to be. We book Pickering work into planned trips into the area and give you real dates, not a same-week promise.

A small machine needs about a 36 inch gate. Where it cannot get through, the concrete is broken by hand and carried out, which takes longer. We decide the machine path at the site visit. Small jobs, like one walkway or an old shed pad, are welcome. We reply to every request within one business day.

Questions

Straight answers

Why did my lakeshore Pickering driveway crack and lift, and will a new one do the same?

Older driveways near the lake usually went down on a thinner base than we build to now. Frost gets under the slab and heaves it, and water in the cracks opens them each winter. When we take the old slab out, the base is rebuilt while the ground is open, compacted in lifts and graded for drainage, before the new pour.

Can you take out concrete in a backyard with a narrow gate?

Yes. Our smallest machines clear about a 36 inch gate. If there is no machine access, we break the concrete by hand and carry it out. It takes longer, so we put it in the written quote after the site visit.

How much does concrete removal cost in Pickering?

The thickness of the slab, how much mesh and rebar is in it, and how a machine reaches it set most of the cost. A flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.

What happens to the old concrete?

Clean concrete goes to a recycler and is crushed into road base. The mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled on their own.
