Concrete Removal & Demolition in Toronto

We break out and haul away old driveways, walkways, steps, patios and slabs across Toronto. The city's old lots are tight, so the first question is how a machine reaches the concrete, and the second is what the lake-plain clay did to the base under it. Union-certified crews, a free written quote with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and Toronto jobs booked into planned trips with real dates.

Most Toronto driveways are on their second or third life. The old city went up close and tight, and whole districts were built long before current base and drainage practice. So a Toronto removal job is rarely just a slab on an open lot. It is a slab between two houses, behind a narrow gate, or at the end of a shared drive, sitting on clay that has been working against it for decades.

The removal follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Toronto ground and Toronto lots change about that job. For everything else we do in the city, see our Toronto page.

Tight lots and narrow gates: the machine path comes first

On a lot in Leslieville or the Annex, the space beside a house can be tight. Our smallest machines clear about a 36 inch gate. Where a machine cannot get through, the concrete is broken by hand with jackhammers and carried out, which takes longer. We decide the machine path at the site visit and put it in the written quote, so the access plan is not a surprise on the day.

Shared and mutual driveways add a step. We keep the neighbour's access open through the work and cut a clean line with a saw where old concrete meets concrete that stays, so the new surface can tie in at the boundary.

What the old slab tells you about the clay

Much of Toronto sits on the flat lowland along Lake Ontario, where the ground runs to fine clay and silt. Clay holds melt and rain against the underside of a slab, and frost lifts what sits on it. That is why so many old Toronto driveways and steps have heaved, tipped or cracked.

Once the old concrete is out, we look at the base under it and at where the downspouts empty and the ground drains. If the base held water, we dig it out and rebuild it before anything new goes in. If the slab sloped toward an older foundation, we tell you, and we can look at basement waterproofing in Toronto while the ground beside the wall is open.

Removal as day one of a new pour

Most Toronto removal leads to a replacement. Doing the tear-out and the new pour with one crew means the base is rebuilt while the ground is open, and you pay for one trip, not two. See concrete driveways in Toronto for what goes back in. Small jobs, like one walkway, a set of steps or an old shed pad, are welcome too.

Booking removal in Toronto

Toronto is the far end of our range, a long haul from our home routes, so we are not minutes away and will not pretend to be. We book Toronto work into planned trips and give you real dates, not a same-day promise. We reply to every request within one business day.

Questions

Straight answers

Can you take out concrete behind a narrow gate or down a side yard?

Yes. Our smallest machines clear about a 36 inch gate. If there is no machine access, we break the concrete by hand and carry it out. It takes longer, so we put it in the written quote after the site visit.

Why did my old Toronto driveway or steps heave, and will a new one do the same?

Much of the city sits on clay that holds water under a slab, and frost lifts it. When we take the old concrete out, we check the base and the drainage, and fix what moved it before the new pour. A new slab on the same wet base would move the same way.

How much does concrete removal cost in Toronto?

The thickness of the slab, how much mesh and rebar is in it, and how a machine reaches it set most of the cost. A flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.

What happens to the old concrete?

Clean concrete goes to a recycler and is crushed into road base. The mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled on their own.
