Thorold has two kinds of ground under it. Most of the town sits on the clay mantle of the escarpment, which holds water and heaves a slab when frost reaches under a thin base. Closer to the escarpment brow, the Lockport dolostone the Welland Canal was cut through comes up near the surface. That changes what an old slab leaves behind, and how the machine works to get it out. See our Thorold page for everything else we do in town.

The removal follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Thorold's ground and homes change about that job.

Canal-era streets: steps poured generations ago

The mill workers' housing downtown still has front steps poured generations ago, and the old canal blocks are where sunken steps are a common repair call. When the steps or a walk have to come out, we saw-cut where the old concrete meets concrete that stays and haul the rest to a recycler.

We look at the steps at the free site visit and give you the plan in writing, so you only pay for the work the job needs.

Clay or rock: what we check once the slab is out

Most of Thorold is built on the clay mantle that heaves a slab when frost reaches under a skimped base, and that ground wants depth and compaction under any new slab. Near the escarpment brow the Lockport dolostone is close to the surface. That ground is stable but harder to excavate and sometimes needs breaking.

We dig test holes before we price the work, so the quote matches the ground you actually have. Spring melt comes off the escarpment, and the low streets near the canal carry a high water table well into a wet spring, so we plan where the water leaves the site.

Confederation Heights and Rolling Meadows: one crew for tear-out and pour

Confederation Heights, beside Brock University, and Rolling Meadows, south of downtown, are the newer surveys, where calls are for patios, garage pads and widened driveways. If something old stands in the way, we can take it out as part of the same job.

Thorold books into our regular Niagara schedule through the pouring season. Small jobs, like one walkway or an old shed pad, are welcome. See concrete patios in Thorold for what goes back in.

Questions

Straight answers

Do you take out sunken front steps in Thorold?

Yes. Steps and walks come out with saw-cut edges where they meet concrete that stays, and the old concrete goes to a recycler. We look at them at the free site visit and put the plan in writing.

Does Thorold's clay or rock change how old concrete comes out?

It can. Most of town is on clay, which wants depth and compaction under any new slab. Near the escarpment brow the Lockport dolostone can be close to the surface, which is stable ground but harder to excavate and sometimes needs breaking. We dig test holes before we price the work.

How much does concrete removal cost in Thorold?

The thickness of the slab, how much mesh and rebar is in it, and how a machine reaches it set most of the cost. We do not post a flat rate, because none of those can be seen over the phone. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless the job changes.

What happens to the old concrete?

Clean concrete goes to a recycler and is crushed into road base. Mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled separately from the concrete.
