Concrete Removal Day: What to Expect, Start to Finish

Updated October 2026

On a typical residential concrete removal day in Southern Ontario, the crew walks the job with you first, then saw-cuts the edges that stay, breaks the slab out, cuts free any mesh or rebar, loads the broken concrete for a recycler and grades the space before leaving. Most tear-outs are one day on site. Large driveways, thick reinforced pads and backyards with hand-carry access can take two. The utility locates are ordered beforehand and take about a week to be marked. You finish with a walk-around of the cleaned and graded space.

Knowing how the day runs makes it easier to plan around. This is the removal day from the homeowner’s side: what you will see, hear and decide. For the technical order of a tear-out, read our guide to how concrete removal works.

Before the crew arrives

The machine day is the last step, not the first. Utility locates are required by Ontario law before any digging, and we order them as part of the job. They take about a week to be marked, so the date on your quote follows the locates.

Before that day, clear the slab and the route to it. Move vehicles, planters and furniture. Know where your sprinkler heads and any lighting are, and tell us.

The start of the day: the walk-through

The crew starts by walking the job. This is the moment to point out the lawn, the fence, soft ground and the neighbour’s side. We plan the machine path before the machine arrives, and the walk-through is where that plan is confirmed with you.

Saw cuts first

Wherever the old concrete meets concrete that stays, such as a house step or a part of the driveway you are keeping, the slab is saw-cut first. The cut gives a clean edge and keeps the breaker from chewing past the line. We water the saw cuts so the dust settles instead of drifting onto your hedge or the neighbour’s.

Breakout: the loud part

A skid steer with a hydraulic breaker handles open areas, and jackhammers work against the house and in tight yards. Expect noise for much of the day. If the only way in is a narrow gate, the smallest machines clear a 36 in. gate, and where nothing fits the concrete is broken by hand and carried out.

Mesh and rebar hold the broken pieces together. Each piece has to be cut free before loading, so this is often the slow part of a thick, reinforced slab.

Loading and hauling

Clean concrete is loaded and hauled to a recycler, where it is crushed and comes back as road base. Mesh and rebar are recycled separately. Nothing is buried on your property.

Grading and the walk-around

Before the crew leaves, the space is graded. If new concrete is coming, it is left as compacted granular ready for forms. If the slab is gone for good, it is finished with gravel or topsoil, so the yard looks like yard.

Then you walk the space with the crew. Cleanup and grading are written into the scope, so this is where you check that they were done.

What to be ready for

  • Noise and dust. Both are part of the day. Watering the saw cuts helps with dust.
  • Lawn marks. A tracked machine crossing a lawn in a wet week will leave marks. We say that at the quote instead of pretending it won’t happen.
  • A second day. Most residential tear-outs are one day. Large driveways, thick reinforced pads and hand-carry backyards can take two.

Getting a quote

Tell us what is coming out, how thick it looks, whether mesh or rebar shows and how wide your gate is. We will visit and give a free written quote, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized. If you want new concrete after the tear-out, we quote both together, and the new concrete carries our lifetime warranty on labour. Questions
Do I need to be home on removal day?

It helps to be there for the start and the end. At the start the crew confirms the cut lines, the machine path and where the lawn, fence and soft ground are. At the end you walk the graded space with the crew. If you can't be there, settle those points at the quote.

Will concrete removal damage my lawn?

A tracked machine crossing a lawn in a wet week can leave marks. We plan the machine path before the machine arrives, lay protection where the ground is soft and say at the quote what marks are likely.

How loud is a concrete tear-out?

Expect a hydraulic breaker or jackhammers for much of the day. It is noisy work. A word with close neighbours beforehand is a courtesy they tend to appreciate.

What should I move before the crew arrives?

Clear vehicles, planters, furniture and anything else on or beside the slab, and keep the machine route free. Tell us about sprinkler heads, lights and any other feature near the work when you ask for a quote.

What is left when the crew drives away?

The concrete is hauled away and the space is graded. If new concrete is coming, we leave compacted granular ready for forms. If the slab is gone for good, we finish with gravel or topsoil.
