Concrete Patios in Thorold
We pour concrete patios across Thorold, from the new backyards in Confederation Heights and Rolling Meadows to the canal-era streets downtown and out in Port Robinson. Most of Thorold sits on clay that heaves with frost, while lots near the escarpment brow can hit dolostone close to the surface, so we check your ground first and build the base to match it. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Thorold sits on the Niagara Escarpment, and two kinds of ground sit under it. Most of the town is built on a clay mantle: tight ground that holds water and lifts a slab when frost gets under a thin base. Closer to the escarpment brow, the Lockport dolostone that the Welland Canal was cut through comes up near the surface. One lot can dig through clay while the lot next door hits rock.
For a patio, that means the base is not the same on every street. On clay, the job needs depth and compaction under the slab and water moved away from it. On rock close to the surface, the ground is stable but harder to dig. We find out which you have before we quote, so the price matches your lot, not an average.
The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the 100 mm slab, the compacted granular base and the slope of about 2 percent away from the house, is on our concrete patios page. This page is about what Thorold's ground and homes change. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number you pay.
Clay, rock and spring water
On Thorold clay, frost is the main risk. Clay holds water, and water under a slab freezes and lifts it. So we dig to firm ground, put down a compacted granular base, and slope the patio away from the house so the water does not collect at the foundation or under the slab.
Water is the other Thorold constant. Spring melt comes off the escarpment, and the low streets near the canal and the old raceways keep a high water table well into a wet spring. On those lots, where the downspouts and the patio's runoff go matters as much as the slab. We plan that with you before the forms go in.
New surveys and canal-era backyards
Confederation Heights, beside Brock University, and Rolling Meadows, south of downtown, are the newer surveys. There the patio is often the job the builder left for the homeowner. Subdivision ground is disturbed soil that keeps settling for a season or two, so wait until the builder sets the final grade and the lot has been through a season. We then compact the base mechanically instead of trusting the fill.
Downtown, the mill workers' housing from the canal and paper-mill years has concrete poured generations ago. A new patio there often starts with taking out an old cracked slab and finding what failed under it. If the old patio went in flat or sloped toward the house, the new one fixes that. Out in Port Robinson, Allanburg and Beaverdams, patio jobs book on the same routed days as the rest of town.
Finish, cure and when to book
Broom finish gives grip and is the most affordable. Exposed aggregate adds texture. Stamped concrete adds pattern and colour; see our stamped and decorative concrete page if you are weighing it. Whatever the finish, the slab is 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the mix made for freeze-thaw winters and the road salt that comes with them.
You can walk on a new patio after 24 to 48 hours, set furniture on it after about a week, and seal it at about 28 days. We give you the cure and sealing guidance in plain words. Thorold jobs book into our regular Niagara schedule through the pouring season. Summer is the busy stretch in the new surveys, so asking for a quote in spring tends to get you a better slot.
Straight answers
Part of Thorold is on rock and part is on clay. Does that change a patio?
Yes, and it is the first thing we check. Near the escarpment brow, the Lockport dolostone is close to the surface. It is stable ground, but harder to dig and sometimes it needs breaking. Most of the rest of town is on clay, which heaves with frost and needs depth and compaction under the slab. We check your lot before we price the work.
We just moved into Confederation Heights or Rolling Meadows. When can we add a patio?
After the builder sets your final grade and the lot has been through a season. New subdivision ground keeps settling for a season or two, so we compact the base mechanically instead of trusting it. Ask for a quote in spring, because summer is the busy stretch in the new surveys. If you pour the patio in the same season as your fence and landscaping, you only dig up the yard once.
Our house is on a low street near the canal. Does that change the patio?
It can. The low streets near the canal keep a high water table well into a wet spring. So we take extra care with the slope away from your foundation, about 2 percent, and with where the patio's runoff and your downspouts go. If the basement also takes on water in spring, our [basement waterproofing page](/services/basement-waterproofing/) explains how we find the cause.
Can you replace an old cracked patio behind an older house downtown?
Yes. We take out the old slab, find what failed under it, and pour a new patio on a compacted base, sloped away from the house. The labour carries our lifetime warranty for as long as you own the home.
How much does a concrete patio cost in Thorold?
Size, the finish you choose, access to the backyard and what the base needs all set the number. On a Thorold lot the base can change it, because clay needs more depth and compaction than rock close to the surface. Broom finish is the most affordable; exposed aggregate and stamped work cost more. We give you a written quote after a free site visit, and the number we give you is the number you pay.
