Stamped & Decorative Concrete in Thorold

We pour stamped and decorative concrete in Thorold: patios, walkways and driveway borders in slate, flagstone, cobblestone and wood-plank patterns. Thorold sits on escarpment clay, with dolostone close to the surface near the brow, so the base under the pattern is built to your lot. Union-certified crews do the colour and stamping, the labour carries a lifetime warranty, and the written quote is free.

Stamped concrete in Thorold is asked for in the newer surveys. Confederation Heights, beside Brock University, and Rolling Meadows, south of downtown, hand owners a plain backyard, and a stamped patio or a stamped border is a common way to finish it. Downtown, the canal-era streets have older stone and block foundations, and a new surface beside them should sit quietly.

Thorold's ground changes the job. Most of the town is built on the clay mantle of the escarpment, which heaves with frost under a skimped base. Closer to the escarpment brow, the Lockport dolostone comes up near the surface, so one lot digs through clay while the next hits rock. The base under the pattern matters as much as the pattern.

The method, pattern families, colour system and joint layout are on our stamped and decorative concrete page. This page covers what stamping a Thorold yard asks of the crew: a base built to the real ground, and drainage that sheds spring melt. The site visit and the written quote are free.

Clay and rock: the base under the pattern

We find out which ground you have before we quote. On clay, we dig to firm ground and build the base on it. Where dolostone is close to the surface, the ground is stable but harder to dig, and sometimes it needs breaking.

The slab is built with a 32 MPa air-entrained mix for freeze-thaw.

Spring melt and drainage

Spring melt comes off the escarpment, and the low streets near the canal and the old raceways keep a high water table well into a wet spring. We grade the surface so melt runs off the slab instead of freezing under it, and we plan where the downspouts and the runoff go before the forms are set.

Choosing a pattern for a new survey or a canal-era street

In Confederation Heights and Rolling Meadows the house is often a blank slate, so the choice is wide. A stamped border around a broom-finish field is also an option, if stamping the whole area is more than you need.

Beside the stone and block of the old downtown housing, quieter patterns sit best: ashlar slate or random flagstone, with a colour taken from the stone, brick or trim.

Questions

Straight answers

Does Thorold's mix of clay and rock change a stamped patio?

It changes the base. Most of the town is on clay that heaves with frost, and lots near the escarpment brow can have dolostone close to the surface. We check your lot before we price the work.

What stamped pattern suits an older home in downtown Thorold?

Quieter ones. Ashlar slate or random flagstone in a colour taken from the stone, brick or trim usually sits better than a bright, busy surface.

How much does stamped concrete cost in Thorold?

Stamped work is an upgrade over a standard broom slab. The pattern, the number of colours, the hand detailing, the size of the area and what the ground needs first all move the number. A free site visit gets you a written quote, and the number on the quote is the number you pay.
