Concrete Removal & Demolition in Richmond Hill
We break out and haul away old driveways, patios, walkways, steps and slabs across Richmond Hill. Around Mill Pond and old Yonge Street the homes are a century old, with steps that have settled and driveways on their second or third pour. In the newer surveys toward Oak Ridges and Lake Wilcox, owners want a wider drive or a real patio where the builder left a strip. Quotes are free and written, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized.

Richmond Hill is built on the Oak Ridges Moraine, the ridge of glacial sand and gravel that Yonge Street follows north through the city. That ground changes what happens after the old concrete comes out: sand gives a new poured edge nothing to push against, so the base has to be rebuilt boxed in and packed hard. See our Richmond Hill page for everything else we do in town.
The removal follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Richmond Hill ground and homes change about that job.
Mill Pond and old Yonge Street: century homes, second and third pours
The heritage streets around Mill Pond and old Yonge Street hold century homes on their original foundations. Many driveways there are on their second or third pour, and front steps have settled. A step that has dropped or a slab poured over more than once may need to come out.
Some steps can be relevelled or rebuilt instead of torn out, and we tell you which, so you do not pay for a tear-out you do not need.
Moraine sand: rebuilding the base after the tear-out
Sand drains fast, so frost has less water to grab and a slab heaves less than it would on clay. The weak point is the edge. Loose granular ground gives a poured rim nothing to lean on, so after the old concrete is out, we look at what is left underneath, then box in and compact the base before anything new goes down. We decide that on site, lot by lot.
Near Oak Ridges and Lake Wilcox the north end sits over kettle lakes and old wetland, and the water table can climb close to the surface after the melt. We read those lots before we promise a base. See concrete driveways in Richmond Hill and concrete patios in Richmond Hill for what goes back in.
The newer surveys: making room for the bigger pour
In the newer surveys to the north, owners often want what the builder skipped: a wider driveway, a patio, a walkway beside the drive. Where an old strip or small pad is in the way, it comes out first. New-survey ground keeps settling for a season or two, so we check compaction before we pour on a fresh lot.
Doing the tear-out and the new pour with one crew means the base is rebuilt while the ground is open. Richmond Hill is north of our home routes, reached up the 400, 407 and 404, so jobs are booked into planned trips on set dates, not a same-day call. Small jobs, like one walkway or an old shed pad, are welcome.
Straight answers
Can the old steps at my century home off old Yonge Street be repaired instead of removed?
Sometimes. Settled steps can often be relevelled or rebuilt rather than torn out. We tell you straight when a repair will hold and when replacing the piece is the better choice, at the free site visit.
Does the base need attention after old concrete comes out on Oak Ridges Moraine sand?
Yes. Sand drains well, but it gives a new slab edge nothing to push against. The base has to be boxed in and compacted hard. We check what is under the old slab and decide the base on site.
How much does concrete removal cost in Richmond Hill?
The thickness of the slab, how much mesh and rebar is in it, and how a machine reaches it set most of the cost, so a flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
What happens to the old concrete?
Clean concrete goes to a recycler and is crushed into road base. The mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled on their own.
