Concrete Driveways in Richmond Hill
We pour new and replacement concrete driveways across Richmond Hill, from the century homes off old Yonge Street to the newer surveys toward Oak Ridges and Lake Wilcox. The city sits on the Oak Ridges Moraine, so we build the base for sand, and we check for a high water table on the wet lots in the north end. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Richmond Hill is built on the Oak Ridges Moraine, the ridge of glacial sand and gravel that Yonge Street follows north through the city. Sand drains fast, so frost has less water to grab, and a slab heaves less than the same slab on the clay further south.
Sand has a different weak point. A loose granular base gives a poured edge nothing to push against, so if the base is not boxed in and packed hard, it spreads and the driveway cracks at the rim. A Richmond Hill driveway is decided in how the base is built. The full spec is on our concrete driveways page; this page is about what a Richmond Hill driveway needs.
A contained base on moraine sand
We excavate to stable ground, compact the granular base, and contain the edges so the base cannot move out from under the slab. Then we pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the mix for slabs that live with freeze-thaw and road salt, and cut the control joints.
We grade the driveway so meltwater runs off and away from the concrete, and does not sit in the sand under it. We decide the base after we see your lot, because two lots on the same street can need different prep.
Wet pockets near Oak Ridges and Lake Wilcox
The moraine is a groundwater recharge area, and the north end of the city sits over kettle lakes and old wetland. In those pockets, the water table comes up close to the surface after the snow melts, even when the lot next door drains clean.
On a lot like that, we check what the ground is doing before we set the base and the grade. If the basement also takes water in spring, see our page on basement waterproofing.
Old Yonge Street and the newer surveys
On the heritage streets around Mill Pond and old Yonge Street, many driveways are on their second or third pour. A replacement starts with tear-out: we break out the old slab, haul it away, fix what made it fail, and pour fresh.
In the newer surveys to the north, owners often want what the builder skipped, like a wider driveway or a walkway beside it. New-survey ground keeps settling for a season or two, so we check compaction before we pour on a fresh lot.
Richmond Hill is north of our home routes, reached up the 400, 407 and 404, so we book Richmond Hill jobs into planned trips on set dates. Keep vehicles off a new slab for 48 hours at least, so plan the pour around when you need the car.
Straight answers
Does a driveway in Richmond Hill need a different base because of the moraine?
Yes. Moraine sand drains fast, so frost heave is a smaller risk than on clay. But loose sand gives the slab edge no support. If the base is not contained and compacted, it spreads and the driveway cracks at the rim. We build the base for sand and decide the details on site.
We live near Lake Wilcox and water sits on our driveway in spring. What do you do?
In the wet pockets around Oak Ridges and Lake Wilcox, the water table rises close to the surface after the melt. We check the ground before we pour, and we grade the new slab so water runs away from it and from the house.
Our older home off old Yonge Street has a cracked driveway. Can you replace it?
Yes. We tear out and haul away the old slab, find what made it fail, and fix that before we pour. Tear-out and disposal go in the written quote, so there is no surprise at the end.
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Richmond Hill?
Size, finish, access, tear-out of an old slab and the base your ground needs all set the number. A flat figure online would only mislead you. We give you a written number after a free visit, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
