Concrete Walkways & Steps in Richmond Hill

We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps, porches and entrances across Richmond Hill, from the century homes off old Yonge Street to Oak Ridges and Lake Wilcox. The city sits on Oak Ridges Moraine sand, so a path needs a base that is boxed in and packed hard. Quotes are free and written, and the labour carries a lifetime warranty.

Richmond Hill is built on the Oak Ridges Moraine, the ridge of glacial sand and gravel that Yonge Street follows north through the city. Sand drains fast, so frost has less water to grab than it does in clay. A walkway here heaves less than the same path would further south.

Sand has its own weak point. A loose base gives the edge of a path nothing to push against, so a base that is not contained spreads and the slab cracks at the rim. The full method for footings, riser heights, mix and thickness is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page covers what Richmond Hill ground and Richmond Hill homes change about that job. See our Richmond Hill page for everything else we do in the city.

Walkways on moraine sand

A freestanding walkway sits on a compacted granular base, with 100 mm (4 in.) of 32 MPa air-entrained concrete on top. On the moraine we box in the edges of that base and pack it hard, so it cannot spread out from under the slab.

We slope the path so meltwater runs off it and away from the house. Water that sits in sand under a path still freezes and moves it, even if the sand drains well.

Steps and porches on the heritage streets

Around Mill Pond and old Yonge Street, many homes are a century old and their front steps have been through a lot of winters. Watch for a gap between the steps and the house, a landing that tips away from the door, and treads that are flaking from road salt.

New steps and porches that attach to the house get footings below the frost line, about 1.2 metres down. That stops them moving on their own as the ground freezes and thaws. If the foundation wall also takes water in a wet spring, we can look at basement waterproofing at the same visit.

Wet pockets near Oak Ridges and Lake Wilcox

The north end of the city sits over kettle lakes and old wetland. In those pockets the water table comes up close to the surface after the snow melts, even when the lot next door drains clean.

On a lot like that, we check what the ground is doing before we set the base and the grade for a path or a set of steps, so water does not collect at the door.

Booking a Richmond Hill job

Richmond Hill is north of our home routes, reached up the 400, 407 and 404, so we book jobs into planned trips on set dates. The written quote names each part, the steps, the walkway and any tear-out, so you can compare it with anyone else's. We reply to every request within one business day.

Questions

Straight answers

Does a walkway on the Oak Ridges Moraine need a different base?

Yes. Moraine sand drains fast, so frost heave is a smaller risk than on clay. But loose sand gives the slab edge no support. If the base is not contained and compacted, it spreads and the path cracks at the rim. We build the base for sand and decide the details on site.

Our century home off old Yonge Street has steps pulling away from the house. Can you fix them?

Yes. Steps that are cracked through are rebuilt on footings below the frost line. We look at yours at the free site visit.

How much do new concrete steps cost in Richmond Hill?

Steps are quoted by the job, not by area. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
