Concrete Slabs & Garage Pads in Richmond Hill
We pour garage pads, shed pads, hot tub slabs and gazebo slabs across Richmond Hill, from the century lots off old Yonge Street to the newer surveys toward Oak Ridges and Lake Wilcox. The city sits on the Oak Ridges Moraine, so we build the base for sand, and we check for a high water table on the wet lots in the north end. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Richmond Hill is built on the Oak Ridges Moraine, the ridge of glacial sand and gravel that Yonge Street follows north through the city. Sand drains fast, so frost has less water to grab, and a pad heaves less than the same pad on the clay further south.
Sand has a different weak point. A loose granular base gives a poured edge nothing to push against, so if the base is not boxed in and packed hard, the pad spreads and cracks at the rim. The full spec is on our concrete slabs and garage pads page; this page is about what a Richmond Hill pad needs.
A contained base on moraine sand
We excavate to stable ground, then place 150 to 200 mm of Granular A and compact it in lifts. Where soft or disturbed soil comes out, the base goes deeper. We contain the edges so the base cannot move out from under the slab, then pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete.
We grade the pad so meltwater runs off and away from the concrete and does not sit in the sand under it. We decide the base after we see your lot, because two lots on the same street can need different prep.
Garage pads: built to carry the walls
A detached garage pad is usually a floating slab. The edges are thickened to about 300 mm so they can carry the walls, and the slab goes in at 125 to 150 mm with 10M rebar on a 400 mm grid, not light mesh. Vehicles can go on it after 48 hours at the earliest, and framing after about 7 days.
Bring the garage plan to the site visit, and we plan the edges, anchors and the slope at the door to match it. A hot tub pad must be dead level and reinforced for the load, and a little larger than the tub so the steps and service panel land on concrete. If the shed is a light resin one, a compacted gravel pad does the job for less, and we will tell you so.
Wet pockets near Oak Ridges and Lake Wilcox
The moraine is a groundwater recharge area, and the north end of the city sits over kettle lakes and old wetland. In those pockets, the water table comes up close to the surface after the snow melts, even when the lot next door drains clean.
On a lot like that, we check what the ground is doing before we set the base and the grade, so water leaves the pad and the building beside it. If your basement also takes water in spring, see our page on basement waterproofing.
Old Yonge Street and the newer surveys
On the heritage streets around Mill Pond and old Yonge Street, an old pad or garage floor may need tear-out first. We break out the old slab, haul it away, fix what made it fail, and pour fresh.
In the newer surveys to the north, ground on a fresh lot keeps settling for a season or two. We check compaction before we pour. Richmond Hill is north of our home routes, reached up the 400, 407 and 404, so we book Richmond Hill jobs into planned trips on set dates. We reply to every request within one business day.
Straight answers
Does a garage pad in Richmond Hill need a different base because of the moraine?
Yes. Moraine sand drains fast, so frost heave is a smaller risk than on clay. But loose sand gives the slab edge no support. If the base is not contained and compacted, the pad spreads and cracks at the rim. We build the base for sand and decide the details on site.
Our lot near Lake Wilcox stays wet in spring. Can you still pour a pad?
Yes. In the wet pockets around Oak Ridges and Lake Wilcox, the water table rises close to the surface after the melt. We check the ground before we pour, and we grade the pad so water runs away from it.
Rebar or wire mesh for my pad?
It depends on the load. Wire mesh suits light pads for sheds, hot tubs and gazebos. Garage and shop slabs that carry vehicles get 10M rebar on a 400 mm grid.
How much does a garage pad cost in Richmond Hill?
Size, thickness, reinforcement, access and the base the ground needs set the number. A figure online would only mislead you. We give you a written number after a free visit, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
