Concrete Removal & Demolition in Markham
We break out and haul away old driveways, patios, walkways, steps and slabs across Markham. In the old cores of Unionville, Markham Village and Thornhill, the homes are a century and more old, with steps that have settled and driveways already poured over once or twice. In the newer subdivisions of Cornell, Berczy and Greensborough, homeowners want a patio, a wider drive or a garage pad. Quotes are free and written, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized.

Markham sits on the South Slope of the Oak Ridges Moraine, on a clay-rich till that swells with water and lifts under frost. That ground is why an old slab here is rarely just a slab to lift out: what sits under it decides how the new base has to be built. See our Markham page for everything else we do in town.
The removal follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Markham ground and Markham homes change about that job.
The old cores: Unionville, Markham Village and Thornhill
These streets hold homes a century and more old, standing on their first foundations, with steps that have settled and driveways already poured over once or twice. A tipped porch step or a driveway poured over more than once may need to come out. Some steps can be relevelled or rebuilt instead of torn out, and we tell you which, so you do not pay for a tear-out you do not need.
Inside Unionville's heritage conservation district, street-facing work has to keep the heritage look, so we plan the breakout and the new work around what the street sees.
Clay till: rebuilding the base after the tear-out
Markham clay swells when wet and lifts as frost drives down beneath a slab. A pour set on it without a base dug to depth and packed hard tends to crack and ride up inside a few seasons. After the old concrete is out, we look at what is left underneath before anything new goes in. That is decided on site, lot by lot.
Lots near the Rouge River creeks stay wet well into the season, so we read those lots before we promise a base. See concrete driveways in Markham and concrete patios in Markham for what goes back in.
Cornell, Berczy and Greensborough: making room for the bigger pour
The planned communities around Cornell, Berczy and Greensborough want what the builder left undone: a back patio, a drive widened past the strip, a pad for the garage. Where an old strip or small pad is in the way of the new work, it comes out first.
Doing the tear-out and the new pour with one crew means the base is rebuilt while the ground is open. Markham jobs are grouped into planned trips and booked on firm dates, not a same-day call. Small jobs, like one walkway or an old shed pad, are welcome.
Straight answers
Can the old steps at my Unionville or Markham Village home be repaired instead of removed?
Sometimes. Settled steps can often be relevelled or rebuilt rather than torn out. We tell you straight when a repair will hold and when replacing the piece is the better choice, at the free site visit.
Does the base need attention after old concrete comes out on Markham clay?
Yes. Markham clay swells with water and lifts under frost, so a new slab needs a base dug to depth and packed hard. We check what is under the old slab and decide the base on site.
How much does concrete removal cost in Markham?
The thickness of the slab, how much mesh and rebar is in it, and how a machine reaches it set most of the cost, so a flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
What happens to the old concrete?
Clean concrete goes to a recycler and is crushed into road base. The mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled on their own.
