Concrete removal and demolition of an old slab, Paris, Ontario

Concrete Removal & Demolition in Paris, Ontario

We break out and haul away old driveways, patios, walkways, steps and slabs across Paris. In the older streets near the forks of the Grand and Nith, the concrete is often decades old and sits on clay that holds spring water, so removal is day one of a repair or a replacement. In the newer subdivisions around Scenic Ridge, we plan the removal around what goes back in. Quotes are free and written, with the breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized.

Paris has two kinds of concrete to remove. The older streets, with front steps and walks poured generations ago, have slabs that have heaved, spalled or pulled away from the house. The newer lots have builder-poured pads and narrow driveways that owners now want bigger. The ground under both is the clay loam of central Brant, and it holds meltwater and lifts what sits on a thin base. See our Paris page for everything else we do in town.

The removal follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler, not a landfill. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Paris ground and Paris homes change about that job.

Lower town and the old streets: find out why the slab moved

The streets near the forks of the Grand and Nith are the oldest in Paris, and the lower streets drop toward the water. When spring melt comes down both rivers, the water table under those streets rises and the clay holds the moisture for weeks. Old steps and walks in that ground often settled or heaved long before anyone called us.

Taking the old concrete out is the easy part. The useful part is what we see once it is gone: how thick the base was, where the downspouts empty and where the water sits. If the base held water, we dig it out and rebuild it before anything new goes in. If the slab sloped toward a stone foundation, we tell you, and we can look at basement waterproofing in Paris or concrete repair and resurfacing in Paris while the ground beside the wall is open.

Scenic Ridge and the newer lots

West of the core, Scenic Ridge, Scenic Ridge East and Mile Hill are newer streets, and many lots there have a small builder-poured driveway or pad. When one has to come out for a wider driveway or a larger pour, we plan the machine path and the new base at the site visit.

Doing the tear-out and the new pour with one crew means the base is rebuilt while the ground is open, and you pay for one trip, not two. See concrete driveways in Paris and concrete patios in Paris for what goes back in.

Booking removal in Paris

Paris sits directly on the Brant County circuit our crews drive, so in season a job here books into the next regular run. A small machine needs about a 36 inch gate. Where it cannot get through, the concrete is broken by hand and carried out, which takes longer. We decide the machine path at the site visit.

Small jobs, like one walkway, one set of steps or an old shed pad, are welcome. We reply to every request within one business day.

Questions

Straight answers

Why did the steps or walk at our older Paris home heave or crumble?

Much of Paris sits on clay loam that holds spring water and freezes deep in a cold winter. Water and frost under a thin base lift and crack a slab over the years. When we take the old concrete out, we check the base and the drainage, and fix what moved it before the new pour.

Can you take out concrete in a backyard with a narrow gate?

Yes. Our smallest machines clear about a 36 inch gate. If there is no machine access, we break the concrete by hand and carry it out. It takes longer, so we put it in the written quote after the site visit.

How much does concrete removal cost in Paris?

The thickness of the slab, how much mesh and rebar is in it, and how a machine reaches it set most of the cost. A flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.

What happens to the old concrete?

Clean concrete goes to a recycler and is crushed into road base. The mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled on their own.
