Ancaster sits on and just above the Niagara Escarpment, where clay and clay-loam lie over limestone bedrock. Clay holds water where frost can reach it, so many old slabs here have heaved or cracked on a thin base. See our Ancaster page for everything else we do in town.

The removal follows our usual method: utility locates before any machine digs, saw cuts where old concrete meets concrete that stays, mesh and rebar cut free, and the old concrete sent to a recycler. The full method is on our concrete removal and demolition page. This page covers what Ancaster ground and Ancaster homes change about the job.

Escarpment clay and limestone: look at the base once the slab is out

When an Ancaster driveway or patio has heaved, taking it out is the easy part. The useful part is what we see once it is gone. We check the depth and compaction of the base under it and where the water goes. If the base was too thin or held water, we dig it out and rebuild it before anything new goes in.

Near the escarpment brow the limestone can sit close to the surface. That changes how water drains and how deep the base can go, so we read the actual lot at the site visit. If the old slab was sending water toward the house, we can look at basement waterproofing in Ancaster while the ground beside the wall is open.

Meadowlands, Tiffany Hills and Spring Valley: clearing the way for the bigger pour

East of Highway 403 the houses are newer, and the lots are the ones that want the patio, the wider driveway and the garage pad a builder left out. When a small slab or narrow strip is in the way, it comes out first so the bigger pour goes on a rebuilt base.

The old village around Wilson Street

Near Wilson Street the homes are old and development is tightly controlled. Removal here needs a careful hand: the machine path is planned so the lawn, the fence and the old stone or brick are protected, and steps or walks that come out are measured first so the new ones keep the proportions of the original.

A small machine needs about a 36 inch gate. Where it cannot get through, the concrete is broken by hand and carried out. We decide the machine path at the site visit, so nothing is found out on the day. Small jobs, like one walkway or an old shed pad, are welcome. We reply to every request within one business day.

Questions

Straight answers

Our Ancaster driveway heaves every winter. Do we need it removed, or can it be fixed?

Clay over the escarpment holds water where frost can reach it, and a slab on a thin base gets lifted. We look at the lot and the base and tell you in the written quote whether the driveway needs to come out. If it does, we rebuild the base before the new pour.

Can you take out concrete next to a heritage home in old Ancaster?

Yes. We plan the machine path first, use saw cuts to keep the breakout inside the line, and break by hand where a machine would be too close to the old stone or brick. We measure steps and walks before they come out so the replacements match.

Can you take out concrete in a backyard with a narrow gate?

Yes. Our smallest machines clear about a 36 inch gate. If there is no machine access, we break the concrete by hand and carry it out, and we say so in the written quote after the site visit.

How much does concrete removal cost in Ancaster?

The thickness of the slab, how much mesh and rebar is in it, and how a machine reaches it drive the cost. A flat rate posted online would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, with breakout, hauling, disposal and grading itemized, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless the job changes.

What happens to the old concrete?

Clean concrete goes to a recycler and is crushed into road base. The mesh and rebar are cut free and recycled on their own.
