Concrete Slabs & Garage Pads in Ancaster

We pour garage pads, shed pads and hot tub slabs across Ancaster, with the base built for the ground on and above the Niagara Escarpment: clay and clay-loam that heaves on a thin base, and limestone close to the surface in spots. Union-certified crews do the work, the labour carries a lifetime warranty, and the written quote is free.

Ancaster's newer streets east of Highway 403 are the Meadowlands, Tiffany Hills and Spring Valley, and the old village is around Wilson Street. Under all of it sits clay and clay-loam over escarpment limestone.

The ground decides how well a slab holds up. The full spec, thickness, reinforcement and base depth, is on our concrete slabs and garage pads page. This page is about what an Ancaster slab needs in particular. Send the form for a free written quote; the number on it is the number you pay unless you change the job.

Escarpment clay and limestone under the pad

Clay holds water right where frost can reach it. A pad on a thin base gets lifted or tilted when that water freezes, and each winter the cracks grow. So we dig to stable ground, compact a granular base in lifts and grade the pad so melt runs away from it and from the building beside it.

Near the escarpment brow, limestone can sit close to the surface. That changes how water drains and how deep the base can go, so we read the actual lot at the site visit instead of pouring to a template.

Garage and shed pads in the newer subdivisions

A detached garage pad is usually a floating slab. We thicken the edges to about 300 mm so they carry the walls, pour the slab 125 to 150 mm thick and tie a 10M rebar grid instead of light mesh. A shed or hot tub pad is lighter work, and welded wire mesh is the right choice there.

Old village lots

Around Wilson Street, development is tightly controlled and the homes are old. A pad beside a century stone house should stay in proportion with it, and an old cracked pad may have to come out before a new one goes in. We plan the access and the tear-out at the site visit.

Built for salt and freeze-thaw

Ancaster winters mean freeze-thaw and road salt, and a garage floor also takes the salt that drips off a parked car. We pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete outdoors and on garage floors, the mix made for freeze-thaw and de-icing salt. Keep vehicles off a new slab for at least 48 hours.

Questions

Straight answers

Does clay under an Ancaster garage pad need a deeper base?

The base has to match the ground. The clay and clay-loam here hold water where frost can reach it, so a thin base lets the pad lift or tilt. We dig to stable ground, compact a granular base in lifts and grade the pad away from the building.

Rebar or wire mesh for a garage pad in Ancaster?

Rebar. Mesh controls shrinkage cracking and suits light pads like sheds and hot tubs, but a garage floor carries a vehicle, so we tie a 10M rebar grid.

Can you pour a shed or hot tub pad in Ancaster?

Yes. Those are lighter pads, so welded wire mesh is the right reinforcement. The base and the grade away from the house still matter as much as the slab.

How much does a garage pad cost in Ancaster?

Size, finish, base and soil, and how the crew gets in all drive the cost, so a flat figure would mislead you. We give you a free written quote, and the number on it is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
