Ancaster has two kinds of patio job. One is the newer subdivisions east of Highway 403: the Meadowlands, Tiffany Hills and Spring Valley. The other is the old village around Wilson Street, which is heritage ground and needs a slab that suits the house.

Under both sits the same ground. Ancaster is on and just above the escarpment, with clay and clay-loam soils over limestone bedrock. The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the 100 mm slab, the compacted Granular A base and the control joints, is on our concrete patios page. This page is about what Ancaster changes.

Clay under the slab: base depth matters

Clay is the part of Ancaster's ground that moves. It heaves when frost reaches under a slab sitting on a shallow base. A patio here lives or dies on the depth and compaction of what goes under it, so we build on 100 to 150 mm of compacted Granular A, graded so meltwater runs away from the slab.

Near the escarpment brow the limestone can sit close to the surface, which changes how water drains and how the base is built. We read the actual lot rather than pouring to a template.

Slope the patio away from the house

We set every patio at about 2 percent away from the house and check where your downspouts discharge before the forms go in. A patio that traps water against the foundation costs far more later than it cost to pour.

If your basement already takes water, say so at the site visit. The patio grade is part of the answer, and the rest is on our Ancaster basement waterproofing page.

Subdivision backyards and village lots

For a backyard in the Meadowlands, Tiffany Hills or Spring Valley, broom finish gives grip, exposed aggregate adds texture, and stamped concrete adds pattern and colour. We quote whichever you are weighing.

Around Wilson Street the village core is heritage ground. A bright white broom slab beside a century stone house looks out of place, so we steer toward finishes that sit better, such as exposed aggregate or a broom finish tinted a warmer grey. The village core has tight development rules, and we work inside them.

Cure and booking in Ancaster

Our guidance is foot traffic on a new patio after 24 to 48 hours, furniture after about 7 days, and sealing at about 28 days.

Ancaster sits on our Hamilton-area routes off Highway 403, so quotes and pours book into the regular weekly schedule through the season. Everything else we do in town is on our Ancaster page.

Questions

Straight answers

Will the clay in Ancaster crack my new patio?

Clay holds water right where frost can reach it, and a slab on a thin base gets lifted when that water freezes. That is why we build on a compacted granular base, grade the slab so water runs away, and pour air-entrained mix for freeze-thaw and road salt.

Can you build a patio behind a heritage home in old Ancaster?

Yes. We steer toward finishes that suit an older house, such as exposed aggregate that shows real stone or a broom finish tinted a warmer grey. The village core has tight development rules, and we work inside them.

How much does a concrete patio cost in Ancaster?

Size, the finish you choose, access to the backyard, the base and soil, and the season all move the number. We do not post a flat rate. A free written quote comes after a site visit, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.

What does the lifetime warranty on labour cover?

Our workmanship: the site preparation, base, the pour and the finishing done as part of the job, and repairs needed because that work was done wrong. It lasts as long as you own the home where we did the work. Materials carry their manufacturers' warranties, outside our labour warranty.
