Concrete Driveways in Oshawa
We pour new, wider and replacement concrete driveways across Oshawa. In the older south end the job is usually tear-out and a proper base under a tired slab. In the north-end surveys around Windfields and Kedron it is often a first concrete driveway or a wider one on clay-loam till, sometimes with a City curb cut. Union-certified crews, a free written quote that holds, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Oshawa changes as you climb away from the lake, and so does a driveway. The south end sits on the old Lake Iroquois shoreline plain of washed sand and clay, with a high water table near the harbour and the city's oldest housing. North of the old shoreline bluffs the ground turns to clay-loam till, and the homes in Windfields, Kedron and the Taunton growth are new. See our Oshawa page for everything else we do in the city.
Every driveway we pour gets the same core: excavation to stable ground, a compacted Granular A base, 32 MPa air-entrained concrete for freeze-thaw and road salt, and saw-cut control joints. The full spec is on our concrete driveways page. This page covers what Oshawa ground, Oshawa homes and Oshawa rules change about the job.
South Oshawa: tear-out and a real base
Many driveways on the lakeshore and central streets, around Lakeview, McLaughlin, Vanier and behind downtown, are on their second or third life. A driveway poured decades ago rarely got the base depth we use now, and Oshawa clay heaves wherever frost reaches under a thin slab. Once whole panels have lifted, we break out the old slab, haul it away, and fix the base before we pour.
With the water table high near the harbour, we also look at where water goes: the slope of the driveway, the downspouts that empty onto it, and whether melt runs toward the house or the garage. We grade the new slab so water runs off it and away from the foundation. If the basement already takes on water, see basement waterproofing in Oshawa.
North Oshawa: new lots, wider driveways and the curb cut
In Windfields, Kedron, Samac and along the Taunton corridor, the common ask is a first concrete driveway or a wider one. The clay-loam till up there heaves when frost reaches under a slab, and the ground on a new lot keeps shifting for a season or two after the build.
Width has limits. The City of Oshawa says a driveway must meet its Zoning By-law and cannot be more than 50% of the front yard area.
If a wider driveway needs a wider opening at the street, that is a curb cut. You ask Service Oshawa for it, the City visits the site, and once you pay the permit fee, a contractor the City hires cuts the curb. The City reviews curb cuts only from April 1 to November 30 and does not give a timeline, so we plan the pour around the curb cut, not the other way round.
Booking an Oshawa driveway
Oshawa is the far east end of the GTA from our southwest Ontario routes. We book Oshawa driveways into planned trips east along the lakeshore and give you a real date, not a same-week promise. A new slab needs vehicles kept off for at least 48 hours, and heavy trucks off for a full week, so plan the pour around when you need the car. We reply to every request within one business day.
Straight answers
Do I need the City's OK to widen my driveway in Oshawa?
For the curb, yes. A wider opening at the street is a curb cut, and you request it from Service Oshawa; the City visits, you pay a permit fee, and the City's contractor cuts the curb. Curb cut reviews run from April 1 to November 30 only. The driveway itself must meet the Zoning By-law and stay under half of the front yard.
Our south Oshawa driveway has heaved and cracked. Repair or replace?
It depends on the base and how far the cracking has gone. If the slab is otherwise sound, a repair or resurface can buy years. Once whole panels have lifted, we tear out and haul away the old slab, fix the base, and pour new on a compacted Granular A base graded to drain away from the house. Tear-out and disposal are in the written quote.
We just moved into a new build in Windfields. When can we pour a concrete driveway?
Usually after the lot has settled and you can see how water runs across it, often after the first spring. North Oshawa clay-loam till keeps shifting for a season or two after a build.
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Oshawa?
Size sets the floor, then the finish, the base the ground needs, access, the time of year, and whether an old slab has to come out. A curb cut is a separate City fee. We do not post a flat rate that would only mislead you. You get a free written quote after a site visit, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
