Concrete Walkways & Steps in Oshawa
We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and entrances across Oshawa, from sunken steps on the older lakeshore streets to first walkways on new north-end lots. Steps that meet the house sit on footings below the frost line, and every path gets a compacted granular base and a slope that sheds water. Union-certified crews, a free written quote and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Oshawa asks for entrance work in two settings. On the older streets near the lake, around Lakeview, McLaughlin and Vanier and behind downtown, the call is usually a repair or a replacement, such as front steps that have sunk. In the north-end surveys around Windfields, Kedron and the Taunton growth, owners of newer homes call for a walkway, a landing or steps to a side door. See our Oshawa page for everything else we do in the city.
The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the granular base and the uniform risers, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what Oshawa ground and Oshawa homes change about an entrance. The free written quote covers jobs as small as one set of steps.
South Oshawa: sunken steps and tired walks
The lakeshore and central streets were built before walls were sealed to a modern standard. The soil beside a foundation is backfill, and steps poured straight onto it sink and tip away from the door, which opens a gap that sends water down the foundation wall.
Near the harbour the water table is high, because the south end sits on the old Lake Iroquois shoreline plain of washed sand and clay. So we look at where water goes before we pour: the slope of the walk and each tread, and the downspouts that empty onto it. A rebuilt entrance starts with tear-out and disposal of the old steps, then firm ground, a compacted granular base and, wherever the steps attach to the house, footings below the frost line. If the basement already takes on water, see basement waterproofing in Oshawa.
North Oshawa: new lots and clay-loam till
In Windfields, Kedron, Samac and along the Taunton corridor, the ground is clay-loam till. Clay heaves when frost reaches under a slab and holds water against a foundation long after the snow goes, and the ground on a new lot keeps shifting for a season or two after the build.
That is why we check the base before pouring a walkway or a landing, and why many owners wait until after the first spring to pour. We can add a path to a side or rear door, build a landing, or pour steps on the same compacted base. Tell us the whole list at the site visit: a walkway rides on the same trip as a driveway or a patio.
Small jobs and booking
Oshawa is the far east end of the GTA from our southwest Ontario routes. Sunken steps, a cracked walkway panel or a single set of steps ride along on the planned trips east along the lakeshore, and we give you a real date, not a same-week promise. Small jobs still get a written quote and still carry the lifetime warranty on labour. We reply to every request within one business day.
Straight answers
Why have my front steps in south Oshawa sunk or pulled away from the house?
Usually because they sit on loose backfill beside the foundation. The backfill settles, and the steps tip away from the door, opening a gap that sends water down the foundation wall. The fix is new steps on footings below the frost line, or tied into the structure, on a compacted base.
We just moved into a new build in Windfields. When should we pour a walkway?
Usually after the lot has settled and you can see how water runs across it, often after the first spring. North Oshawa clay-loam till keeps shifting for a season or two after a build, so we check the base before pouring.
Is one set of steps too small a job for a crew to come to Oshawa?
No. Sunken steps and a cracked walkway panel ride along on the same routes east as the bigger driveway and patio work. We quote steps in writing like any driveway, and the quote is free.
How much do new concrete steps or a walkway cost in Oshawa?
The number of risers, the height of the whole assembly, tear-out of the old steps, whether footings are needed, the finish and access to the entrance all change it. You get a free written quote after a site visit, and it holds unless you change the job.
