Concrete Driveways in Georgetown
We pour new and replacement concrete driveways across Georgetown, built for the ground on the east side of the Niagara Escarpment: Halton Till clay that heaves under a thin base, Queenston shale that comes up close to the surface in spots, and settling clay fill on the newer Georgetown South lots. Union-certified crews do the work, with a lifetime warranty on labour. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number you pay.

Georgetown sits on the east, downhill side of the Niagara Escarpment, on Halton Till, a stiff glacial clay-loam laid over the red Queenston shale. Clay of that kind heaves when frost works under a thin slab, which is why so much of the older flatwork in town lifts and cracks.
So a Georgetown driveway is decided in the base, not on pour day. We dig down to firm material, compact a granular base in lifts, pour an air-entrained 32 MPa mix, saw-cut the joints, and grade the slab so runoff goes away from it, not under it. The full spec is on our concrete driveways page. This page is about what a Georgetown driveway needs in particular.
Clay that heaves, and rock that changes the dig
Halton Till holds water. When that water freezes under a slab on a thin base, it pushes the slab up. The fix is depth and drainage, not thicker concrete: excavation to stable ground, a compacted base built in lifts, and a grade that carries meltwater off the driveway.
South of Georgetown the glacial cover thins, and the shale bedrock comes up close to the surface in spots. An excavation that is routine on one street can hit rock on the next. We look at the lot before we quote, so the depth of the dig and the base are in the written number, not a surprise on the day.
Georgetown South: wait for the fill to settle
Georgetown South has been built out survey by survey since 1989, much of it on disturbed clay fill. Foundation backfill keeps settling for a season or two after the builder hands over the lot. A driveway poured onto soil that is still moving cracks, however good the mix is.
On these lots we compact the base mechanically instead of trusting fresh fill. On a brand-new lot, we will often tell you to wait one season before the new driveway goes in. A widened driveway is a common job here. Where trucks or trailers park, we pour 125 mm instead of 100 mm.
Older streets: tear-out first
In the Main and Church core, the King and Queen blocks, Delrex and Moore Park, many driveways are on their second or third surface, and the postwar ones are at the end of their service life. Replacing an old driveway starts with tear-out. We break out the old slab, haul it away, fix the base problem that cracked or lifted it, and pour fresh.
A new slab needs vehicles kept off for 48 hours at least, and heavy trucks for 7 days, so plan the pour around when you need the car.
Straight answers
Our Georgetown South driveway cracked and the house is almost new. Why?
The ground, not the concrete. Much of Georgetown South is built on disturbed clay fill, and the backfill keeps settling for a season or two after the builder hands over the lot. Concrete poured onto soil that is still moving cracks. We compact the base mechanically before we pour, and on a very new lot we may tell you to wait a season.
Why does the dig for a Georgetown driveway change from one street to the next?
Because the ground changes block to block. South of Georgetown the glacial till thins and the Queenston shale sits close to the surface in places, while a short distance away it is under deep clay. Shallow rock can change how deep we excavate for the base, so we look at each lot on the site visit before we quote.
Can you replace the old driveway on our older Georgetown street?
Yes. We tear out and haul away the old slab, find what lifted or cracked it (usually water held in clay under a thin base), and fix that before we pour. The new driveway goes on an excavated, compacted granular base, graded to drain. Tear-out and disposal are in the written quote.
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Georgetown?
Size, access, the finish, whether an old slab has to come out, and what the ground needs first all set the number. In Georgetown the base prep can change it more than anything, because a lot over shallow shale or soft clay fill is dug and built differently from easy ground. We do not post a flat price that would only mislead you. A firm written quote comes after a free site visit, and the number on the quote is the number you pay unless you change the job.
