Concrete Walkways & Steps in Georgetown
We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and entrances across Georgetown, from dropped steps in the older blocks around Main and Church to a first walkway on a Georgetown South lot. Georgetown sits on Halton Till, a stiff clay that heaves with frost and holds meltwater against the wall, so steps that meet the house sit on footings below the frost line and every path gets a compacted granular base and a slope that sheds water. Union-certified crews, a free written quote and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Georgetown asks for entrance work in two settings. In the older streets around Main and Church, and in Delrex and Moore Park, the call is usually a repair or a replacement, such as front steps that have dropped or a walk at the end of its service life. In Georgetown South, built out survey by survey since 1989, owners call for a walkway to a side door, a landing or steps to a back yard. See our Georgetown page for everything else we do in town.
The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the granular base and the uniform risers, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what Georgetown ground and Georgetown homes change about an entrance. The free written quote covers jobs as small as one set of steps.
Main and Church, Delrex and Moore Park: dropped steps and tired walks
The older part of Georgetown is built on Halton Till, a stiff glacial clay-loam over red Queenston shale. Clay of that kind heaves when frost works under a thin slab and holds meltwater against a foundation long after the snow is gone. Steps poured onto loose backfill beside a wall tend to drop and tip away from the door, and the gap that opens sends water down the foundation wall.
So we look at where water goes before we pour: the slope of the walk and of each tread, and the downspouts that empty onto it. A rebuilt entrance starts with tear-out and disposal of the old steps, then firm ground, a compacted granular base and, wherever the steps attach to the house, footings below the frost line. If the basement already takes on water, see basement waterproofing in Georgetown.
Georgetown South: newer lots on settling ground
Georgetown South is built on disturbed clay fill, and the backfill against a foundation keeps settling for a season or two after the builder hands over the lot. A walkway or landing poured too early can sink at the door.
That is why we check the compaction before pouring, and why on a brand-new lot we will often tell you to give it a season. We can add a path to a side or rear door, build a landing, or pour steps on the same compacted base. Tell us the whole list at the site visit: a walkway rides on the same trip as a driveway or a garage or shed pad.
Shallow shale: why we read the lot first
South of Georgetown the glacial cover thins out and the shale comes up close to the surface in places, so a dig that is routine on one street can hit rock on the next. Footings for steps need that depth, so we read each lot on the site visit before we quote, not after the work has started.
Small jobs get the same written quote and the same lifetime warranty on labour as a full entrance. A sunken front step or a couple of heaved walk panels ride along on the same Halton routes as the larger pours. We reply to every request within one business day.
Straight answers
Why have my front steps near Main Street dropped or pulled away from the house?
Usually because they sit on loose backfill beside the foundation, in clay that heaves with frost. The backfill settles, and the steps tip away from the door, opening a gap that sends water down the foundation wall. The fix is new steps on footings below the frost line, or tied into the structure, on a compacted base.
We have a newer home in Georgetown South. When should we pour a walkway?
Usually after the lot has settled and you can see how water runs across it, often after a season or two. Backfill against a new foundation keeps settling after handover, so we check the compaction before pouring.
Is one set of steps too small a job in Georgetown?
No. A sunken front step or a few heaved walk panels ride along on the same Halton routes as bigger pours. We quote steps in writing like any driveway, and the quote is free.
How much do new concrete steps or a walkway cost in Georgetown?
The number of risers, the height of the whole assembly, tear-out of the old steps, whether footings are needed, the finish, the ground and access to the entrance all change it. You get a free written quote after a site visit, and it holds unless you change the job.
