Concrete Walkways & Steps in Whitby
We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and entrances across Whitby, from sunken steps on the old streets near Port Whitby to first walkways on new Brooklin lots. Steps that meet the house sit on footings below the frost line, and every path gets a compacted granular base and a slope that sheds water. Union-certified crews, a free written quote and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Whitby asks for entrance work in two settings. In old Whitby and toward Port Whitby, the homes are pre-war brick on original foundations, and the call is usually a repair or a replacement, such as front steps that have sunk or a walk that has heaved. In Brooklin and Rolling Acres, owners of newer homes call for a walkway, a landing or steps to a side door. See our Whitby page for everything else we do in town.
The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the granular base and the uniform risers, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what Whitby ground and Whitby homes change about an entrance. The free written quote covers jobs as small as one set of steps.
Old Whitby near the lake: sunken steps and tired walks
The old core and the streets toward Port Whitby sit on the Lake Iroquois shoreline plain, where old beach deposits keep the water table close under the surface. Many of these walls were never sealed to a modern standard. The soil beside a foundation is backfill, and steps poured straight onto it sink and tip away from the door, which opens a gap that sends water down the foundation wall.
So we look at where water goes before we pour: the slope of the walk and each tread, and the downspouts that empty onto it. A rebuilt entrance starts with tear-out and disposal of the old steps, then firm ground, a compacted granular base and, wherever the steps attach to the house, footings below the frost line. If the basement already takes on water, see basement waterproofing in Whitby.
Brooklin and the new surveys: clay-loam till
Inland toward Brooklin, the ground is clay-loam till. Clay swells when it is wet and heaves when frost gets under a slab, and a new lot keeps settling for a season or two as the fill compacts.
That is why we check the base before pouring a walkway or a landing, and why many owners wait until after the first spring to pour. We can add a path to a side or rear door, build a landing, or pour steps on the same compacted base. Tell us the whole list at the site visit: a walkway rides on the same trip as a driveway or a patio.
Small jobs and booking
Whitby is on the Durham lakeshore, a long way east of our usual southwest Ontario routes. We group Whitby jobs into planned trips out that way and give you a real date, not a same-week promise. Sunken steps, a cracked walkway panel or a single set of steps ride along on those trips. Small jobs still get a written quote and still carry the lifetime warranty on labour. We reply to every request within one business day.
Straight answers
Why have my front steps in old Whitby sunk or pulled away from the house?
Usually because they sit on loose backfill beside the foundation. The backfill settles, and the steps tip away from the door, opening a gap that sends water down the foundation wall. The fix is new steps on footings below the frost line, or tied into the structure, on a compacted base.
We just moved into a new build in Brooklin. When should we pour a walkway?
Usually after the lot has settled and you can see how water runs across it, often after the first spring. Brooklin clay-loam till keeps shifting for a season or two after a build, so we check the base before pouring.
Is one set of steps too small a job for a crew to come to Whitby?
No. Sunken steps and a cracked walkway panel ride along on the same planned trips as the bigger driveway and patio work. We quote steps in writing like any driveway, and the quote is free.
How much do new concrete steps or a walkway cost in Whitby?
The number of risers, the height of the whole assembly, tear-out of the old steps, whether footings are needed, the finish and access to the entrance all change it. You get a free written quote after a site visit, and it holds unless you change the job.
