Concrete Walkways & Steps in Welland
We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and porches across Welland, from century homes along the old canal to new lots at Empire Canals. Welland sits on flat Haldimand clay that swells, heaves and drains slowly, so steps and paths here need a solid base and footings that go below the frost. Union-certified crews do the work, the labour carries a lifetime warranty, and the written quote is free.

Steps and walkways sit where the ground was dug out and put back: at the edge of the house. In Welland that ground is flat Haldimand clay, which swells when wet, heaves when frost reaches under it, and holds water for weeks after the snow goes. The city also takes close to a metre of snow most winters, so freeze-thaw and road salt work on every exposed step.
The full method for footings, riser heights, mix and thickness is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page covers what Welland ground and Welland homes change about that job. For everything else we do in the city, see our Welland page.
Century homes by the canal: steps that have settled
Along both banks of the recreational waterway, many houses are a century old, with original foundations. On a home that age, steps and walkways that have been through many freeze-thaw seasons may show a gap between the steps and the house, a landing that tips away from the door, or treads that flake from road salt.
If steps are sound but have settled, they can sometimes be put back once the water problem is fixed. Steps that are cracked through, or have taken water into their body for years, get rebuilt. Where the foundation wall also lets water in, we can look at basement waterproofing in Welland at the same visit.
High water table: grading that sends water away
The recreational waterway runs through the core, and the shipping canal and the Welland River cross the south end. The low ground near them carries a high water table that rises through spring melt, and the clay holds that water against the house.
A walkway on those lots needs a compacted granular base and a slope that carries water off the concrete and away from the foundation, not along it. New steps that attach to the house get footings below the frost line, or are doweled into the foundation wall where that is the sounder detail, so they do not move as the ground freezes and thaws.
New lots at Empire Canals and Hunters Pointe
On new surveys such as Empire Canals, Hunters Pointe and the lots off Woodlawn Road, the soil beside a new foundation is backfill, and it keeps settling for a season or two. Steps or a walkway poured on it can sink and open a gap at the house.
So we compact the base mechanically and check the grade before we pour. If you just took possession, letting the lot come through its first spring before a permanent pour usually gives a better result. A quote request in spring also gets you a better slot before the summer rush. We reply to every request within one business day.
Straight answers
Why are the steps on our older Welland house pulling away from the wall?
Usually because the ground under them has moved. Welland clay swells when wet and heaves with frost, and old steps often sit on a thin base with no footing. Sound steps that settled can sometimes be lifted back; failed ones get rebuilt on proper footings.
We bought at Empire Canals. When should we redo the front walkway?
After the builder sets your final grade, and usually after the first spring so you can see how water moves across the lot. New-survey soil keeps settling for a season or two, so we compact the base mechanically before we pour.
How much do new concrete steps cost in Welland?
Steps are quoted by the job. The number of risers, the total height, the footings and the tear-out of the old set drive the number, so we do not post a flat figure that would only mislead you. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
Do you take small jobs, like one front step or a section of walkway?
Yes. Steps and walkway panels ride along on the same Niagara routes as full driveways. Small work still gets a written quote and carries the lifetime labour warranty.
