Welland sits in the middle of south Niagara, a city of about 55,750 that grew up where rails and water meet. What the ground here does to concrete
Welland is built on the flat Haldimand clay plain that runs across south Niagara down toward Lake Erie, and clay is the hard ground to own concrete on. It swells when wet, heaves when frost reaches under a slab, and drains slowly enough to hold water against a foundation wall for weeks after the snow goes.
