Concrete Patios in Welland
We pour concrete patios across Welland, from the older backyards along the recreational waterway to the new lots at Empire Canals and Hunters Pointe. Welland sits on heavy Haldimand clay that holds water and heaves with frost, so we dig to solid ground, compact a granular base, and slope each patio about 2 percent away from the house. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Welland is built on clay. The city sits on the flat Haldimand clay plain of south Niagara, and clay is hard ground for a patio. It swells when wet, heaves when frost gets under a thin slab, and drains so slowly that it can hold water for weeks after the snow goes.
Welland is also a canal city. The recreational waterway runs through the core, and the bypass channel and the Welland River cross the south end. The low ground near them holds a high water table that rises through spring melt. So a Welland patio is won under the slab and in its slope, not in the finish.
The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the compacted granular base and the control joints, is on our concrete patios page. This page is about what Welland's ground and homes change. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
Clay, frost and a wet spring
On clay, the risk is frost heave. Wet clay freezes and lifts whatever sits on a thin base, and Welland takes close to a metre of snow most winters, so the freeze and thaw work on a patio every year. We excavate to solid material and compact the granular base in lifts.
Water is the other risk. A patio poured flat, or sloped toward the house, sends the spring melt straight at the foundation, and on the low lots near the river and the old canal banks the ground already holds water close to the house. We slope every patio about 2 percent away from the wall and check where the downspouts empty before the forms go in. If your basement already gets damp in spring, see our Welland basement waterproofing page.
New lots at Empire Canals, older yards by the waterway
Empire Canals, Hunters Pointe and the surveys off Woodlawn Road keep adding lots that close as graded dirt out back, and the patio is often the job the builder left out. Disturbed subdivision soil keeps settling for a season or two. Wait until the builder sets the final grade, and give the lot a spring to show how water moves across it. We compact the base mechanically instead of trusting the fill.
The older streets along both banks of the waterway, through Crowland and the established west-side blocks, are the other Welland. There, a new patio often starts with taking out an old cracked slab and finding what failed under it. If the old one sloped toward the house, the new one fixes that.
Finish, cure and when to book
Broom finish gives grip and is the most affordable. Exposed aggregate adds texture. Stamped concrete adds pattern and colour; see our stamped and decorative concrete page if you are weighing it. Whatever the finish, the slab is 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the mix made for freeze-thaw winters.
Our crews reach Welland on the regular Niagara run, so in season a job here books onto a routed day. Summer is the busy stretch on the new east-side surveys, so a spring quote gets you a better slot. We reply to every request within one business day.
Straight answers
Why do patios in Welland heave and crack?
The ground. Welland sits on the flat Haldimand clay plain, and clay swells, freezes and lifts a slab poured on a thin base. We excavate to solid material, compact the granular base in lifts, pour air-entrained 32 MPa mix and cut control joints, so the cracks happen where we plan them.
We just moved into Empire Canals. When can we put in a patio?
After the builder sets your final grade, and usually after the first spring, so the lot can show you how water moves across it. New subdivision soil keeps settling for a season or two, so we compact the base mechanically. Ask for a quote in spring, because summer is the busy stretch on the east-side surveys.
Our yard is near the Welland River and stays wet in spring. Does that change the patio?
It can. The low ground near the river and the old canal banks holds a high water table after the melt. So we take extra care with the slope away from your foundation, about 2 percent, and with where the patio's runoff and your downspouts go. We look at your lot before we quote.
How much does a concrete patio cost in Welland?
Size, the finish you choose, access to the backyard, and the base the clay needs all move the number. Broom finish is the most affordable, exposed aggregate is a step up, and stamped work costs more. We give you a written quote after a free site visit, with no deposit to get a price, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
What does your warranty cover?
Our labour carries a lifetime warranty for as long as you own the home. It covers our workmanship, including the site preparation, the base, the pour and the finishing, and repairs needed because that work was done wrong. The details are on every written quote.
