Concrete Walkways & Steps in Waterloo
We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and porch slabs in Waterloo, from the cracked front walks of older uptown and campus-area houses to the new lots at Vista Hills, Clair Hills and Laurelwood. The city sits on the sand of the Waterloo Moraine, where running water rinses sand out from under a step or a walkway edge, so we build each entrance on a compacted base with footings below the frost line where steps meet the house. Union-certified crews, a free written quote and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Waterloo is built on the Waterloo Moraine, a deep deposit of glacial sand and gravel. Sand drains meltwater instead of holding it under the concrete, so frost lifts a walk here less than it does on clay. What sand does instead is move. Water that runs to the same spot season after season carries the sand away, and the step or walkway edge above it is left bridging a hollow.
The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix and the compacted granular base, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what Waterloo's ground and homes change. The site visit and the written quote are free.
Sand that washes out from under steps
On the moraine sand, the job is to keep the ground where it is. We build on a compacted granular base.
Where new steps or a porch meet the house, they sit on footings below the frost line or tie into the structure. Steps poured onto the loose backfill beside a foundation settle with it and pull away from the door, and the gap that opens sends water down the foundation wall.
Older uptown and campus-area entrances
The streets around the universities are thick with older houses and rentals, and most of that stock is decades old. Front walks have cracked and lifted, and steps have sunk or loosened from the door. On those homes, replacing steps starts with taking out the old set and checking what is under it.
We schedule the pour around a house that stays lived in. The labour carries the lifetime warranty whether you live there or rent it out.
New west-end lots and low ground near the creeks
The west-end surveys at Vista Hills, Clair Hills and Laurelwood are where new entrances, side paths and walkway extensions go in. Backfill on a new lot keeps settling for a year or two, so we check compaction before we pour rather than trust loose fill.
Not all of Waterloo is dry sand. The low strips near Laurel Creek and Silver Lake carry a higher water table than the sandhills above them. On those lots, an entrance that holds water or sheds it toward the foundation matters more. We check which ground you have at the site visit.
Straight answers
Why did my front steps in Waterloo sink or tip away from the door?
Usually because they sit on loose backfill beside the foundation, or on sand that water has washed out from under them. Backfill keeps settling for years, while the house stays put on footings below the frost line. A gap opens that sends water down the foundation wall. The fix is new steps on footings below the frost line, or tied into the structure, on a compacted base.
Can you work on a rental property that stays tenanted?
Yes. We give you a written quote and schedule the pour around the house being lived in. The labour carries the warranty whether you live there or rent it out.
What does a walkway or steps job in Waterloo start with?
A free site visit and a free written quote. The number we quote is the number on the invoice unless the job changes, and our labour carries a lifetime warranty.
