Concrete Patios in Waterloo

We pour concrete patios across Waterloo, from older uptown backyards to the west-end surveys at Vista Hills, Clair Hills and Laurelwood. Waterloo sits on the sand of the Waterloo Moraine, so we build each patio on a contained, compacted granular base, slope it about 2 percent away from the house, and keep downspout water off its edges. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Waterloo is built on sand. The city sits on the Waterloo Moraine, a thick deposit of glacial sand and gravel that drains far quicker than the clay an hour south. For a patio that is mostly good news: water soaks down through the ground instead of pooling under the slab, so frost has less to lift.

Sand has its own catch. Loose granular ground washes out when water is allowed to run across it in one place. The usual Waterloo failure is not a heaved patio but a patio edge sitting on ground that has quietly rinsed away underneath, often below a downspout that empties onto the slab. So a Waterloo patio is won at the edges and the base, not in the depth of the dig.

The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix, the 100 mm slab, the compacted Granular A base and the control joints, is on our concrete patios page. This page is about what Waterloo's ground and homes change. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number you pay.

Sand changes where a patio fails

On clay, the worry is frost heave. On Waterloo's moraine sand, the worry is erosion. A patio already moves water away from the house, so every patio we pour sends runoff off its edges. On sand, that runoff has to land somewhere it cannot dig. We plan with you where the downspouts and the patio's runoff go before the forms go in.

The low strips near Laurel Creek and Silver Lake carry a higher water table than the dry sandhills above them. On a lot down there, the slope away from the foundation matters even more, because the ground already holds more water close to the house. We check which ground you have at the site visit and build the base and the grade to suit it.

New west-end backyards and older uptown ones

Vista Hills, Clair Hills and Laurelwood are recent subdivisions, and the patio is often the job the builder left for the homeowner. A new lot keeps settling for a year or two after the build, and a slab poured on ground that is still moving cracks early. Give the lot a season first; we check the compaction before we commit to a pour.

Uptown and the streets around the universities are the other Waterloo: older houses, many of them rentals, with backyard concrete that has aged hard. There, a new patio often starts with taking out an old cracked slab and finding what failed under it. If the old patio went in flat or sloped toward the house, the new one fixes that. We can schedule the work around a house that stays lived in or tenanted.

Finish, cure and when to book

Broom finish gives grip and is the most affordable. Exposed aggregate adds texture. Stamped concrete adds pattern and colour; see our stamped and decorative concrete page if you are weighing it. Whatever the finish, the slab is 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the mix made for freeze-thaw winters.

Foot traffic can go on a new patio after 24 to 48 hours, furniture after 7 days, and we seal it at about 28 days. Waterloo jobs ride our regular routes through the pouring season. The west-end summer slots fill fast once the whole street has the same idea, so quoting in spring is smart.

Questions

Straight answers

Does Waterloo's sandy ground make a concrete patio easier or harder?

Easier in one way and harder in another. The moraine sand drains quickly, so a Waterloo patio heaves less in winter than the same slab would on clay. The trade is erosion: sand washes out where water runs over it, so an edge or a corner can lose its support. We compact a granular base, contain the edges, and keep downspout water off the slab.

We just moved into a new house in Vista Hills. When can we put in a patio?

Give the lot a season first. A new survey keeps settling for a year or two after the build, and pouring onto ground that is still moving is how a patio cracks early. We check the compaction before we commit to anything. Ask for a quote in spring, because the west-end summer slots fill up fast.

Our lot is in the low ground near Laurel Creek. Does that change the patio?

It can. The low strips near Laurel Creek and Silver Lake hold a higher water table than the sandhills above them. So we take extra care with the slope away from your foundation, about 2 percent, and with where the patio's runoff and your downspouts go. We look at your lot before we quote.

Can you replace an old cracked patio behind a rental near the universities?

Yes. Much of our Waterloo work is on older houses near the campuses. We take out the old slab, fix what failed underneath, and pour a new patio sloped away from the house. We schedule the work around the tenants, and the labour carries the lifetime warranty whether you live there or rent the house out.

How much does a concrete patio cost in Waterloo?

Size, the finish you choose, access to the backyard, and the base the ground needs all move the number. Broom finish is the most affordable, exposed aggregate is a step up, and stamped work, borders and multiple levels cost more. If the concrete truck cannot reach the forms, the crew moves the mix by pump or wheelbarrow, and the quote names that. We give you a written quote after a free site visit, and the number we give you is the number you pay.
