Concrete Walkways & Steps in Kitchener

We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and porch slabs in Kitchener, from century-home entrances in the old Berlin core to new lots in the south-end surveys around Doon. Much of the city sits on the sand of the Waterloo Moraine, where running water washes sand out from under a step or a slab edge, so we build each entrance on a compacted base with footings below the frost line where steps meet the house. Union-certified crews, a free written quote and a lifetime warranty on labour.

Much of Kitchener sits on the Sandhills, the sand and gravel of the Waterloo Moraine. Sand drains meltwater instead of holding it in layers under the concrete, so frost lifts a walk here less than it does on clay. What sand does instead is move. Water that runs to the same spot for years carries the sand away grain by grain, and the step or walkway edge above it is left bridging a hollow.

That is the usual story behind a Kitchener step that has dropped or a walk panel that has cracked at the corner: a downspout that empties beside the entrance. The full method, the 32 MPa air-entrained mix and the compacted granular base, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what Kitchener's ground and homes change. The site visit and the written quote are free.

Sand that washes out from under steps

On the moraine sand, the job is to keep the ground where it is. We dig out loose soil, and compact a granular base in layers. We also look at where your downspouts empty, because a spout aimed at the foot of the steps is what hollows the ground out.

Where new steps or a porch meet the house, they sit on footings below the frost line or tie into the structure. Steps poured onto the loose backfill beside a foundation settle with it and pull away from the door, and the gap that opens sends water down the foundation wall.

Lots near the Grand River and its creeks

Not all of Kitchener is sand. The low ground along the Grand River and the creeks that feed it, Schneider and Strasburg among them, has a higher water table than the sandhills above. On those lots, an entrance that holds water or sheds it toward the foundation matters more.

We check which ground you have at the site visit.

Berlin-core entrances and south-end new builds

The old Berlin core downtown and the heritage streets around it hold the city's oldest housing, century brick on foundations of the same age. On those homes, replacing steps starts with taking out the old set and checking what is under it.

The south end, out around Doon and the newer surveys, is where Kitchener has grown hardest. We compact our own base rather than trust loose fill.

Questions

Straight answers

Why did my front steps in Kitchener sink or tip away from the door?

Usually because they sit on loose backfill beside the foundation, or on sand that water has washed out from under them. Backfill keeps settling for years, while the house stays put on footings below the frost line. A gap opens that sends water down the foundation wall. The fix is new steps on footings below the frost line, or tied into the structure, on a compacted base.

Can you replace just the broken panels of my Kitchener walkway?

Yes, on your own property. Concrete replaces cleanly at the joints, so we cut out the failed panels and pour new ones to the same line and height. Expect the new panels to look brighter than the old for a season or two.

What does a walkway or steps job in Kitchener start with?

A free site visit and a free written quote. The number we quote is the number on the invoice unless the job changes, and our labour carries a lifetime warranty.
