Concrete Walkways & Steps in Niagara Falls
We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and porches across Niagara Falls, from the older blocks of Drummondville and Stamford to the low ground in Chippawa and the newer streets out toward Garner Road. The city sits on Haldimand clay, so new steps that attach to the house get footings below the frost line, and we pour air-entrained 32 MPa concrete for winters that thaw and refreeze again and again. Union-certified crews, a free written quote, and a lifetime warranty on labour.

A front walk in Niagara Falls takes a lot. The ground under it is clay that holds water and heaves when frost gets in. The winters run between two lakes, and the air keeps pushing the temperature back above freezing, so the concrete freezes and thaws over and over.
The full method, the footings, riser heights, mix and thickness, is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page is about what a Niagara Falls entrance needs in particular. See our Niagara Falls page for everything else we do in the city.
Steps on clay need footings below the frost line
Your house sits on footings below the frost line. Steps that only sit on clay do not, so they rise and drop with each winter while the house stays put. That pulls them away from the door and opens a gap that sends water down the foundation wall.
New steps and porches that attach to the house get footings dug to about 1.2 metres, so they move with the house and not with the clay. Treads are finished for grip, and risers are formed to one height, because uneven risers catch a foot.
Older entrances in Drummondville and Stamford
The oldest homes in the city are in Drummondville around Lundy's Lane and in the older Stamford blocks. Not every tired set needs replacing. A porch with spalled corners on a sound slab can often be resurfaced; see our concrete repair and resurfacing page. Steps that sank in one piece but are still solid can often be lifted back into place. Steps cracked through, heaved, or built wrong from the start get torn out and rebuilt on proper footings.
If the old steps have been steering water at the wall, we tell you at the site visit.
Chippawa and the low ground: watch the water
Chippawa sits low and flat near the Welland River, and the clay there stays wet for weeks after the spring melt. A walk that slopes toward the house sends that water to the foundation.
If a basement wall already lets water in, we tell you, and we can look at basement waterproofing in Niagara Falls first.
New lots near Garner Road: let the ground settle
On a new build, the ground beside the foundation is backfill, and it can keep settling. Pour a walk or steps onto it too soon and they can sink and tip. Wait until the builder has set the final grade and you have watched how water moves across the lot.
Thaw after thaw: mix and finish
A walk that freezes once and stays frozen has an easy time. One that freezes, thaws and refreezes takes water into its surface each time, and the ice lifts thin flakes off the top. So we pour a compacted granular base and 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the same exterior standard as our driveways, with a 100 mm (4 in.) walkway slab.
Straight answers
Why are my front steps in Drummondville pulling away from the house?
Usually because they were never on footings below the frost line. Niagara Falls sits on clay that heaves when frost gets into it, so steps that only sit on the ground move each winter while the house stays put. Rebuilt steps get footings to about 1.2 metres, so they move with the house.
We just moved into a new build near Garner Road. When can we pour a front walk?
After the builder has set the final grade, and ideally after the first spring, so you have seen how water moves across the lot. Backfill beside a new foundation can keep settling, so waiting protects the walk.
Will a new walk make my Chippawa basement wetter?
Not if it is built right. We slope the walk away from the house. If your wall already leaks, we tell you before we pour.
