Concrete Walkways & Steps in Caledonia
We build and rebuild concrete walkways, front steps and porches in Caledonia. On new Avalon lots the steps sit on backfill that is still settling, so timing matters. On the older streets near the Argyle Street bridge, the job is usually a set of steps that has moved or spalled. Union-certified crews do the work, quotes are free and written, and the labour carries a lifetime warranty.

Caledonia buys walkways and steps at both ends of its age range. Empire's Avalon community is still adding homes, and new owners want a proper path and front steps where the builder left a bare strip. The older streets off Argyle Street, near the nine-span bridge across the Grand, carry original walks and steps that have settled, tilted or cracked.
Under both is the Haldimand clay plain. Clay holds spring melt near the surface, and steps sit at the edge of the house, where the soil was dug out and put back. The full method for footings, riser heights, mix and thickness is on our concrete walkways and steps page. This page covers what Caledonia ground and Caledonia homes change about that job.
New Avalon lots: steps and paths on settling backfill
On a new lot, the ground beside the foundation is backfill, and regraded clay keeps settling for a season or two. Steps or a walkway poured on it can sink and pull away from the house, which opens a gap that sends water toward the foundation.
So we check the compaction before we pour. A freestanding walkway floats on a compacted granular base with a slope so water runs off it. If you just took possession, it is worth letting the lot come through its first winter before a permanent pour.
Older streets near the bridge: steps that have seen decades of winters
Around the Argyle Street bridge, many homes are of a similar vintage, with original walks and steps. Watch for a gap between the steps and the house, a landing that tips away from the door, and spalled treads.
New steps and porches that attach to the house get footings below the frost line, so they do not move as the ground freezes and thaws. If the wall already lets water in, we tell you, and we can look at parging in Caledonia or concrete repair and resurfacing at the same visit.
Repair, relevel or rebuild?
Not every worn or sunken step needs replacing. Steps that are sound but have settled can sometimes be lifted back into position once the water problem is fixed. Surface damage on sound concrete is resurfacing work. Steps that are cracked through, or that have taken water into their body for years, get rebuilt on proper footings.
We tell you which one you have at the free site visit. The written quote names each part, the steps, the walkway and the tear-out, so you can compare it with anyone else's. Caledonia anchors the north end of our Haldimand routes, where they meet the Hamilton work, so jobs book into a standing calendar through the season. We reply to every request within one business day.
Straight answers
Why are the front steps on our new Avalon home pulling away from the house?
Usually because they sit on backfill that is still settling, on top of clay. The steps sink while the house, on deep footings, stays put. Solid steps that sank can sometimes be lifted back; failed ones get rebuilt on footings below the frost line so it does not happen twice.
When should we pour a walkway on a new Caledonia lot?
Give the lot a winter if you can. Backfill and regraded clay both settle, and a pour that goes down before the ground finishes moving can crack or tip. Spring quotes also get first pick of summer pour dates.
How much do new concrete steps cost in Caledonia?
Steps are quoted by the job, not by area. The number of risers, the total height, the footings and the tear-out of the old set drive the cost more than size does. The site visit and the written quote are free, and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
Can you rebuild the front walkway and steps together?
Yes. Doing them as one project lets us set the path grade, landing height, riser spacing and drainage together. The written quote can show the walkway and the steps separately, so you see what each part adds.
