Concrete Driveways in Caledonia
We pour new, widened and replacement concrete driveways in Caledonia, on both sides of the Grand. In the Avalon surveys the job is usually widening a builder driveway on ground that is still settling. On the older streets off Argyle it is usually tear-out and replacement. Either way, the ground underneath is Haldimand clay, so the base and the drainage decide how long the slab lasts. Union-certified crews do the work, the quote is free and written, and the labour carries a lifetime warranty.

Caledonia buys driveways at both ends of its age range. Empire's Avalon community is still growing, and new owners often want the builder's driveway wider, or a pad beside it. The established streets off Argyle Street, near the nine-span bridge that has crossed the Grand since 1927, carry older driveways that have heaved, cracked or settled.
Under both, the ground is the Haldimand clay plain. Tight clay holds spring melt where frost can reach it, and a slab on a shallow or loose base gets lifted when that water freezes. The full spec is on our concrete driveways page. This page is about what a Caledonia driveway needs in particular.
Widening a builder driveway in Avalon
A widened driveway is one of the most asked-for jobs in any new survey. We saw-cut a clean edge on the existing slab, match its thickness, and build the same base depth under the addition, so the new strip and the old drive move together or not at all.
Two things on a new Avalon lot change the timing and the plan. Backfill along the foundation and regraded clay both keep settling for a season or two, so we check compaction before we pour, and where the ground is not ready we say so. And each survey is graded to a drainage plan. We will not bury the lot's drainage swale under a wider driveway, because that grading is what keeps the basement dry.
Replacing an older driveway near the bridge
On the older streets off Argyle, the work starts with tear-out. We break out the old slab, haul it away, and find what lifted or cracked it. On the clay plain that is usually water held under a thin base. We fix that first: excavate to stable ground, build a granular base in compacted lifts, and grade the new driveway so melt runs off the slab and away from the house.
Then we pour 32 MPa air-entrained concrete, the mix that holds up to freeze-thaw and salt, and cut control joints where the slab wants to crack. Tear-out and disposal go in the written quote, not a surprise at the end.
Booking a Caledonia driveway
Caledonia anchors the north end of our Haldimand routes, where they meet the Hamilton work, so quotes and pours here book into a standing calendar through the season. A typical driveway takes two to three working days on site, and weather can move a pour. If it moves yours, we call you before pour day.
On a new lot that still needs a winter to settle, a spring quote gets first pick of summer pour dates.
Straight answers
Can you widen the builder driveway on our new Avalon lot?
Yes. We saw-cut a clean edge, match the slab thickness, and put the same base depth under the addition so the old and new parts move together. We check compaction first, because backfill and regraded clay on a new lot keep settling for a season or two. We keep the lot's drainage swale clear, because it keeps your basement dry.
Why did our old Caledonia driveway heave?
Usually clay and a thin base. The clay plain holds water right where frost can reach it, and any slab on a shallow or poorly compacted base gets lifted when that water freezes. A new driveway needs excavation to stable ground, a granular base compacted in lifts, and grading that moves melt away from the slab.
How long before we can drive on a new concrete driveway?
Keep vehicles off for at least 48 hours, and longer for heavy trucks. We give you the exact guidance for your slab and for its first winter when we finish.
What does a new driveway cost in Caledonia?
It depends on size, the finish, whether the old slab comes out first, and what the base needs once we see the soil. That is too much to fold into a flat rate, so the number comes from a free site visit and a written quote. The number on the quote is the number on the invoice unless you change the job.
