Under both, the ground is Haldimand clay. Tight clay holds spring melt where frost can reach it, and a pad on a shallow or loose base gets lifted when that water freezes. New Avalon lots: ground that is still settling
Backfill along a new foundation and the regraded clay around it keep settling for a season or two. A pad poured before the ground finishes moving can crack or tip within a year. We check compaction first, and where the ground is not ready we say so.

Clay, frost and drainage around the pad
Clay holds melt and rain at the surface, and frost lifts what sits on wet ground. The defence is a granular base below frost reach, compacted in lifts, with grading that moves melt away from the slab. We will not bury a lot's drainage swale, because that grading is what keeps the basement dry.

Garage floors, workshops and booking the job
A detached garage floor takes 125 to 150 mm of 32 MPa air-entrained concrete on a 10M rebar grid. Shed and hot tub pads get mesh. Anchor bolts, thickened edges, or a floor sloped to drain at the door go in when the building plan calls for it, and they are priced up front in the written quote.

Rebar or mesh for a garage pad in Caledonia?
Rebar for anything that carries a vehicle: a 10M grid at 400 mm, with thickened edges on a floating garage slab. Mesh is right for light pads like sheds and hot tubs. The written quote names the reinforcement.
How much does a concrete pad cost in Caledonia?
